An effective opener to any Christmas concert, based on the French carol, 'Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella'. It tells the story of a group of children in medieval Provence, dressed up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles as they proceed to the stable. As they draw closer and their excitement increases, they are constantly reminded by their parents to keep the noise down so that they don't wake up the baby Jesus. The music begins quietly and builds to a majestic conclusion. First heard in the original 1967 movie, this familiar tune is featured again in the acclaimed 2016 version. In this clever arrangement for band, the arranger utilizes a peppy 2-beat style, beginning with the trombones taking the melody. Every section of the band soon gets into the act, including a solo or soli for tuba, and a brief slower section for a Dixieland combo leading to the rousing finish. This song is guaranteed to be a highlight at any concert. Note: whilst the demo video demonstrates the concert band arrangement, the version available to purchase on this website is the brass band transcription by Christopher Bond.

DURATION: 3'30". DIFFICULTY: Difficult. 'Temperamental' was composed as the opening item to the Reg Vardy Band's 2019 Brass in Concert Championships programme, which revolved around the 4 temperaments of Human Nature - a theory by the Greek philsopher Galen from 450 BC. This funk-inspired short concert work is deliberately very schizophrenic in nature, encompassing all 4 moods and feelings into the music and featuring a number of soloists from within the band, notably the Flugel Horn, Solo Trombone and Percussion section. .

According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.'
