Fire & the Phoenix, The - Christopher Bond

The Fire & the Phoenix (2015) was commissioned by Brett Baker in early 2015 as the opening track to his solo CD 'Myths & Legends'. Whilst structurally a single-movement work, it is presented so that it can link directly into the next work on the CD, adding to a continuous theme comprising a number of pieces from a number of composers. Opening with huge strident chords in the full band, the representation of the phoenix is instantly reflected; bold, powerful and a bird of great intensity. This makes way for a more mystical section marked 'distant' which reflect the beauty of the Phoenix and it's mythical nature where the trombone soars up into its higher register with a sweeping melody. Soon after, the music takes a sharp turn, becoming dramatic and instantly moving away from the mystical mood created previously. Here, we imagine the Phoenix catching fire, burning intensely with huge flames as it gradually turns into ash. We reach a tonic pedal point in the music, over which chord progressions subtly weave in and out of the texture. Here, we imagine the Phoenix rising from the ashes, with the dynamics gradually increasing to reflect this, slowly taking shape as it is born again. A return to earlier material follows, this time manipulated to reflect the Phoenix in its new form - the same bird; the same animal; but at the same time different. A beautiful chorale-like passage is heard before the music transports us back into a magical land, where delicate rhythmic ideas are juxtaposed against bolder lower chords; both ideas together transporting the listener forward into the next piece.

Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral | Wagner arr. Alwyn Green (10)

A superb arrangement for Brass Ensemble (10) of a timeless classic. Skill is required in this piece to maintain tone quality and a steady even pace throughout the expansive Wagnerian melodies. This piece is one seamless musical gesture, and performers must shape flowing melodies and counter-melodies while retaining proper ensemble balance.Patience and restraint are needed when allowing the music to build logically and cohesively to its magnificent climax. A demanding concert piece.Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral, with its medieval colour and pageantry, prefaces her betrothal to Lohengrin, mystic Knight of the Holy Grail, who comes to deliver the people of (Antwerp) from the Hungarian invaders. The soundtrack is played by the Prince of Wales Brass, formed from members of the City of Birmingham Symphony OrchestraInstrumentation1st Trumpet in Eb2nd Trumpet in BbFlugelhorn / 3rd Trumpet in BbFlugelhorn 2 in BbHorn in F1st Trombone2nd Trombone3rd TromboneBass TromboneTubaOptional OrganPercussion Parts (2):1. Abstractions - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

The first movement is inspired by the northern lights. It constantly changes in colour and shape.2. Rocks (Moderato ben ritmico)I denne satsen er tittelen et ordspill. Ordet "rock" er velkjent i musikken, men er ogsa en enorm stein eller del av et fjell. The title of the second movement is a play with the word "rock" is a well-known word describing a musical genre. But it is also a giant stone or a part of a mountain.3. Seascape (Allegro)I denne satsen forsoker jeg a fange ulike aspekter ved havet, samtidig som satsen samler opp musikalske ideer fra de to foregaende satsene. Denne satsen videreforer, oppsummerer og avslutter verket. The third movement is inspired by different aspects of the sea. It also sums up different ideas that occurs in the two previous movements to round off the whole piece.Tredje utgave - 2015Third Edition - 2015

    Reminiscences - Hans Offerdal

"The past is never dead. It's not even past." - William FaulknerTo the conductor: Slurs in accompanying voices can be seen as indicating the phrasing only, thus breathing is possibe when necessary. It will be the challenge of the conductor to shape this as soft and sostenuto as possible (almost like strings), if needed assign appropriate places to breathe, depending on size and level of the band.Duration: 4 min

    Other Lives - Oliver Waespi

Other Lives is works perfectly for a competition but can also be programmed as concert work. The dark chords at the beginning of the piece are derived from "Der Doppelganger", one of Franz Schubert's late songs. After a short development the music begins to accelerate and find its own shape, gradually moving away from the introduction. The entire first part, "Rage", has an intensely agitated character. The ensuing "Reflection" turns back to the initial chord progression, before a series of interspersing solos explore time and space at a slower pace. After another musical surge, the music is brought close to silence and then gives way to the third part, "Redemption".Here, a widely spaced sound field contains a remote allusion to another work by Schubert "Ruckblick". After this farewell, an abstract musical transformation triggers an emotional change, as the initial motifs are now presented in their inversed form in order to create a much brighter harmonic landscape. Moreover, in the last part of the piece, "Renewal", the grim, tense atmosphere of the first part is transformed into a great energy. Other Lives was commissioned by the Valaisia Brass Band.

    Tracing Time - Oliver Waespi

Tracing Time was commissioned by the WMC Kerkrade Foundation in cooperation with the Foundation of Friends of WMC for the 2017 World Championships in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The musical material of this piece takes the form of a timeline on an imaginary mental map. This unbroken thread runs through the entire work, continually transformed through numerous sound colours and rhythms. At the same time, the piece takes the shape of a symphonic structure, based on three uninterrupted, linked movements. This work meets all standards of a high quality contest or concert work. It is challenging, spectacular, innovative and overwhelming.

    Hypercube - Oliver Waespi

Hypercube is a musical narrative partly inspired by the architecture of the Grande Arche de la Defense in Paris whose shape has been compared to a hypercube. With this landmark building as a starting point, the piece explores the poetry and reality of urban landscapes. In the course of the piece, these contrasting elements are being torn into a dramatic and virtuosic development in extended sections named "Le Vertige" (Vertigo). The Clouds theme returns later in a series of lyrical solos. In the final part of the piece, both the Vertigo and the Hypercube themes become the background for an ongoing acceleration, which conveys the impression of some sort of musicalPenrose stairs. Hypercube was commissioned by the Paris Brass Band and the association ADIAM 94 in 2015.

    The Craftsmen - Christian Bouthier

The energetic activities of three craftsmen at a local crafts market inspired the composer Christian Bouthier to write this work in three movements. The clockmaker gets many curious visitors at his stand. He patiently and proudly shows the precision work of his beautiful clocks and lets all of them tick - the small ones and large ones. The cooper (barrel-maker) skillfully puts together fine-looking, sturdy barrels of the best types of wood. From afar, you can hear the cooper hammering. In the final movement things are hectic at the blacksmith because the local horse-riding society has just arrived. Many horses are provided with new shoes. The experienced blacksmith hits thehorseshoes into the proper shape on his anvil; now the horses can spiritedly trot and gallop on the way back. A fascinating new addition to the concert band repertoire.
