£30.00Rhapsody - Tim Paton
Composer, Tim Paton comments: Rhapsody began life in 1971, as Rhapsody in three movements. It was originally written for wind and brass octet with timpani, and was performed at the Royal Manchester College of Music (soon to become the RNCM) in 1972.Ten years later, it was expanded into a piece for wind band. In 22, I decided to make another major revision, and create a lower section test piece for brass band. I removed the middle movement, and published it as a "Romance" for brass band. I composed a link between what had initially been the outer movements, and renamed the piece Rhapsody".The link is inspired by the minimalist music of Philip Glass. In the lead up to the grand finale of the Rhapsody, I have used an accompanyingmotif/obligato which is directly inspired by a passage in the final movement of Janacek's "Sinfonietta".

£40.87A Carol Rhapsody (Brass Band) Geoffrey Nobes
Capture the mystery, wonder, and joy of the festive season with A Carol Rhapsody (Geoffrey Nobes). This dynamic and brilliantly orchestrated medley weaves together a selection of much-loved Christmas carols, balancing timeless audience favorites with beautiful, lesser-known melodies. Perfect as a centerpiece or finale for your festive concert, this rhapsody provides an engaging musical journey that highlights the full tonal palette of your band.Thoughtfully scored with accessible range demands, standard time signatures, and comfortable keys, A Carol Rhapsody is exceptionally approachable. It serves as an ideal performance piece for 4th Section bands and above, as well as Youth and Training Bands looking for a rich, full-sounding festive work. Higher-section bands will also appreciate its quick rehearsal turn-around during a busy Christmas season. The Musical JourneyAtmospheric Opening: The piece begins with an evocative introduction, featuring subtle echoes of Coventry Carol and Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.Rhythmic & Bright: The tempo shifts into a lively rendition of the old French folk carol O Leave Your Sheep, cleverly interwoven with motifs from Joy to the World and the sweeping refrain of Angels from the Realms of Glory.A Lush, Lyrical Heart: The centerpiece of the work is an extended, beautifully textured setting of another French folk carol, Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance. This section serves as a wonderful showcase, passing the melody throughout various sections of the ensemble in turn.Triumphant Finale: The pacing accelerates into a joyful romp through the traditional English carol I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing in. Excitement builds through a series of key changes, weaving several themes together before culminating in a triumphant Glory to the New-born King - complete with the ringing bells of Ding, Dong! Merrily on High echoing across the band.To view a rolling score video of this piece please visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYehd0CGaA8Duration: approx. 6.30 minutesDifficulty Level: 4th Section +This PDF download includes the full score and parts.Sheet music available at www.brassband.co.uk (UK) or https://satradecentral.org (USA)Instrumentation:Soprano Cornet EbSolo Cornet Bb1st Cornet Bb2nd Cornet BbFlugel Horn BbSolo Horn Eb1st Horn Eb2nd Horn Eb1st Baritone Bb2nd Baritone Bb1st Trombone Bb2nd Trombone BbBass TromboneEuphonium BbBass EbBass BbPercussion 1-3

£94.95Rhapsody on a Theme by Purcell - Contest Edition (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
Contest VersionIn his relatively short lifetime, Henry Purcell (1659 -1695) achieved stellar musical success and was known and admired internationally by his contemporaries. He is justifiably considered one of England's greatest composers.I thought long and hard before using this magnificent theme as the basis for a band piece because I think that Benjamin Britten has said just about everything possible regarding it in his The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Bearing this in mind, I tentatively set about working on this composition. Once started though, the job became fun because the theme still yielded possibilities - even after Britten! The piece is basically a set of linked variations, much like Rachmaninov's great Rhapsody on theme by Paginini. The music starts slowly and makes much use of crisply dotted rhythms - a Purcellian characteristic. The theme is heard twice before the music changes into a jaunty duple time variation based on the opening motif of Purcell's theme. After this, the mood changes to a waltz-like variation in which clear references to the original theme can be heard. The slow movement follows, and is based on rising and descending scalic figures. This variation is an 'A-B-A' movement with two similar passages framing a more vigorous middle section which features antiphonal fanfare-like figures. Without any preamble, the last variation launches itself - a rumbustious dance which has a distinctive feel to it.The theme eventually reappears as a counter-melody to this dance music before a final triumphant treatment of the melody featuring a somewhat athletic bass line. The music accelerates at the Coda and disappears in a 'puff of smoke'.- Kevin Norbury
