    Time Remembered - Philip Sparke

The initial idea was for a millennium piece, which it is, but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium, Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. This calm meditative work will bring a moment of serenity and reflection to any concert.

    Peacemakers - Dan Price

Peacemakers was composed for Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. It received its world premiere on November 17th 2014 at The Sage and concluded their winning ‘Brass in Concert' program, ‘Lest We Forget'.As well as commemorating the centenary of World War I, 2014 also marked the 75th Anniversary of the outbreak of Word War II. Dan Price's Peacemakers pays tribute to those who fought, and uses two contrasting musical ideas as its basis. The motifs and material for the first theme take inspiration from Morse code patterns, and as the work nears a triumphant close the allied forces of World War II are remembered through the words of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill broadcast on 20th August 1940. This speech can be narrated. Alternatively, a free audio download is available from the downloads section of this site.Peacemakers has been recorded by Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their CD 'Grimethorpe Entertain' available to buy here.

Ruslan & Ludmilla - Mikhail Glinka - Robert Childs

Glinka's Ruslan & Ludmilla was first performed on December 9, 1842, in St.Petersburg.Once a popular and influential composer, Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) is primarily remembered today for two operas: A Life for the Tsar (1836) and Ruslan and Ludmilla (1842). The latter, based on the work that brought poet Alexander Pushkin his first success in 1820, seems both a perfect operatic subject and an impossibility.A complicated fairy tale of love overcoming all obstacles, it features a flying dwarf who gets his power from his beard, a fight with a giant disembodied head, a rescue foiled, a slain hero resurrected, and a happy ending with the lovers reunited!Glinka worked intermittently on the Opera for five years and left the composition of the overture to the last minute. Despite the inventiveness of the music and its many memorable melodies, the Opera Ruslan and Ludmilla was a failure. Nevertheless the Overture is a firm favourite and here we have an expertly crafted arrangement for brass band from the pen of Dr Robert Childs.

Pastime with Good Company - King Henry VIII - Philip Sparke

The English king, Henry VIII (1491-1547), is mainly remembered for disposing of his wives on a regular basis and breaking with the Catholic Church when the Pope Clement VII refused to grant him a divorce so he could marry Anne Boleyn. He was, however, a gifted athlete, dancer and composer, writing many songs, poems and consort pieces (though not Greensleeves, as is often believed). Pastime with Good Company is undoubtedly the best-known of these, written in the first years of the 16th century while he was still a handsome prince, newly married to Catherine of Aragon and the envy of Europe. The lyrics tell of the joys of hunting, dancing and singing and would have been sung as part of the court entertainment.
