Music is a mix of communication and energy and this work is designed to allow the players to generate that energy, thus communicating it to the audience. "When Roger Argente approached me to write a composition for his Spanish flavoured brass project, he made the suggestion that a Tango, althoughmore Argentinian than Spanish, would fit in well with the overall concept. I have always been a very big fan of the music of Argentinian composerAstor Piazzolla and particularly the way that the Tango could be combined with jazz. A favourite recording of mine is of Piazzolla himselfperforming (on the bandoneon) with the jazz saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. Roger and I both thought it would be a good idea to let some of themusicians in the ensemble take improvised solos. As the composing progressed, a fugato also emerged hence the title Fugatango."

An upbeat, fun piece which exudes positive-vibes from the outset. This original composition by Darrol Barry for brass band is a great addition to concert repertoire. A nice balance of strong rhythm, touches of featured obligato and a catchy melody.Darrol Barry composed this work in support of a charitable project, known in 2005 as Brass Band Aid. The organisation called for original compositions to be included in a follow-up CD release - Into Africato help raise funds for projects in Adet, Africa, and to build awareness of theMake Poverty History campaign. As it's title suggests, this piece consists of three distinct elements, all of which maximise the stylish creativity of Kenneth Downie's renowned writing talent.After a rich, warm and hymnal opening 'movement' based upon Kum Ba Yah, the work develops and lifts into a fascinating take on 'The Lord's Prayer'. Bringing the piece to an even more positive, up-tempo close is the final section which references the South African traditional song We Are Marching (Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenknos')Kenneth Downie composed this work in support of a charitable project, known in 2005 as Brass Band Aid. This is a concert march with a difference!The whole of the first section is in minor mode - unusual and intended to depict the trials and tribulations which inspired the original (and now successfully completed) Africa-based projects of Brass Band Aid. The Trio then goes into the major and begins with a Prayer motif that starts with the notes B-B-A. Following a rather turbulent episode (a reminder that there is still much to do), the Prayer theme returns triumphantly, reflecting optimism for the future.Roy Newsome composed this work in support of a charitable project, known in 2005 as Brass Band Aid. £30.00Janacek's 'Taras Bulba' - Janacek
Comments from Tim Paton, the arranger of Janacek's 'Taras Bulba': "I will never forget the day in 1967 when I was introduced to the music of Leos Janacek, a Czech composer born in 1854, who died in 1928. Janacek was little known in Britain until the 1960's, when the conductor Charles Macherras introduced his unique music. I heard a recording of Macherras conducting the Pro Arte Orchestra in a performance of Janacek's "Sinfonietta".It was in 1969 that I first heard Janacek's Symphonic Rhapsody, "Taras Bulba".Janacek's music is exciting, powerful, emotive, impassioned and unpredictable.I have taken the first and third movements of this piece, and adapted them for Brass Band, which was at times extremely difficult, but rewarding. It sometimes took up to an hour to be satisfied that a mere several bars had been reproduced to convey the composer's intentions.The Death of AndriThe Cossaks, under the leadership of Taras Bulba, are fighting against the Poles in the 17th century. Taras's son Andri seeks to rescue his love, a Polish princess, from a city which is being besieged by the Cossaks. Having found her, he throws in his lot with the Poles, but is finally captured by his father, who executes him as a traitor before riding off again to battle.Prophesy and Death of Taras BulbaTaras himself is finally captured and condemned to be nailed to a tree and burned alive. As the flames creep around him, Taras has the satisfaction of seeing histroops escape, and as he dies, sees a vision of his country freed at last.This is incredibly descriptive music. The mood is constantly changing, creating feelings of love and anger, celebration and melancholy, despair and triumph.This Brass Band EditionThe duration of the original symphonic rhapsody, three movements, is approximately 23 minutes. I chose the first and third movements, so the Brass Band edition is approximately 14 minutes. The main reason is twofold: Being realistic about the demands this music would place on the stamina of the brass player; Keeping the piece less than 15 minutes, so that, if desired, it could be used on the contest platform.Two unique qualities of Janacek's music had to be taken into account when preparing this brass band version. His compositional technique was individual, at times not sticking to traditional expectations, in both form and orchestration. I imagined what the genius himself would have said looking at my work, and how to tackle a particular section to emulate his original intentions. This was particularly the case when dealing with high woodwind and violin parts, the use of tremolo in string parts, and the orchestral harp.Percussion: Janacek included timpani, side drum, cymbals, triangle and tubular bells. For reasons stated previously, I have also included xylophone and glockenspiel. I have also added the gong in a couple of places to enhance the dramatic effect of the music.

Merry-Go-Round - Tim Paton
I heard a recording of a fairground organ playing a fabulous concert waltz from the early 20th century. It struck me that this music was in the same league as another popular concert waltz, "Nights of Gladness". I aurally transcribed it, and set about creating an exciting piece for brass band, aiming to capture the 'fun of the fair'. The piece needs a good principal cornet, and an efficient glock player would not go amiss!

Dragons' Rise was commissioned by the Tredegar Town Band in July 2008 for their CD recording Spirit of the Valleys, to represent the band beginning their resurrection from a difficult time in the bands history back through to becoming on of the best bands in the world. It was premiered by the Tredegar Town Band at the National Eisteddfod contest in Cardiff in August 2008, performed live on national television, where the band were victorious.Dragons' Rise was the first piece composed by Matthew as the bands new composer-in-residence. Subsequent pieces have included Legends of Cyfarthfa and Nightingale Dances, both winners of the Cyril Beere award for Best New Composition at Brass in Concert, The Smile and Activate.

Dial M for Midnight - Matthew Hall
Dial M for Midnight is a jazz-based solo for aspiring and accomplished cornet players alike. Technically not particularly demanding yet quite complicated rhythmically, Dial M allows players young and old to stand up and show off their skills in a work which has it's roots in Latin America but travels through the late night smoke-filled jazz clubs along the way. Commissioned by Jim Hayes for his debut CD recording, Dial M is the title track. Nicknamed Jimmy Midnight, Jim Hayes has established himself as one of the leading cornet players in the world playing within the Scottish Co-Op Band. Dial M is a take on Jim's persona and his love of jazz, the culmination of which ends up as a witty pastiche signature track of all things James Bond to Perry Mason.
