This set of variations on the well-known hymn tune Holy, holy, holy! will make a most satisfying addition to the solo repertoire for euphonuim and brass band. It is in the traditional air varie form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes' especially for Reginald Heber's renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. A beautiful solo that will test the soloists ability to show true emotion.

Batman - Danny Elfman - Toshihiko Sahashi
The continued collaboration between director Tim Burton and film score composer Danny Elgman has led to numerous unforgettable soundtracks, such as Beetlejuice and Mars Attacks! as well as Batman. Elfman's music captures the vivid dark undertones of the movie, and manages to maintain comic elements. Batman is such a popular character that even the likes of pop-star Prince contributed to the sound track with the song Batdance. Toshihiko Sahashi creates a brilliant medley with The Batman Theme, Batdance, and Party Man.

Programme notes:The hauntingly beautiful theme from Jupiter, from The Planets Suite has a rare qualityexpressing both optimism and dignity which makes it a popular choice for many formalpublic events such as opening and award ceremonies.The tune is originally found in the Jupiter movement from the large-scale work fororchestra called 'The Planets Suite'. Written by the English composer Gustav Holt ThePlanets Suite is thought to be his finest work.The theme has a steady 3/4 rhythm which provides a contrast in terms of tempo andmeter to the rest of the movement, and has been made popular as a patriotic song called'I vow to Thee My Country'.Performance notes:This arrangement makes use of a gradual increase in dynamics, beginning p and ending ff.With this gradual increase in dynamics is a gradual increase in the scoring starting offwith only the lower instruments playing p and ending up with everyone playing ff.The percussion part is very minimal in this arrangement (only 2 notes for the suspendedcymbal) and is an optional part.Just before the final chord there is a cut off marked in the parts. This piece was commissioned by Dr Nicholas Childs and Philip Biggs for the National Children's Band of Great Britain.As the commission was for a youth band, I wanted to compose a piece of music that alluded to the styles and genres of music that are abundant in the current popular music market. However, the National Children's Band isn't just any old youth band; they are some of the finest young musicians in Great Britain. So the challenge was to compose a piece that included many popular music styles whilst providing enough of a test to keep the music technically interesting to work on and perform.The driving force behind the whole piece is the percussion section and in particular, the drum kit which is constant throughout. From the start the music is rhythmic and repetitive, similar to many dance tracks. The music begins to slowly unfold and build in texture and at bar 24 the syncopated main theme appears. This theme reappears throughout the piece along with various other motifs and solo lines. The music uses the styles, rock, pop, latin, funk and dance within the score and has a real fun factor about it.There are lots of opportunities for soloists to play and it is marked in the score where to stand and soloists can come out to the front of the stage. I really enjoyed working on this piece and I'm sure performers and audience members will enjoy it too.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Performance Notes by Andrew Duncan:This fine march theme is arranged in two distinct parts.From the beginning up to two bars before letter C the melody is played quietly with the Horns carrying the tune - the Horns have to play up to a high F in this section. If this is not something that your band can manage then you have two options of where you can start playing the arrangement from.If your band can manage the chromatic notes, then begin playing from two bars before letter C. Alternatively, simply start playing directly from letter C .The musical concepts of Rallentando and A tempo are encountered in this arrangement.
