"Summer Play Samba" is, as the title suggests, a light summer samba, which flows like a fresh summer breeze into the ear canals and stays there.The piece was written in connection with an assignment the composer was to have as a guest conductor at a so-called Summer Play in the Eastern Norway area. Hence the title Summer Play Samba. Here, musicians from far and near meet and participate in a kind of prima vista bonanza, where the main point is to be able to practice music during the summer break. Due to the lack of a piece in the entertainment genre, "Summer Play Samba" was written for this specific evening.After a bit of cleanup and polishing, this great samba is now ready for release."Summer Play Samba" should be a welcome contribution to any entertainment repertoire and is guaranteed to please the ears of many musicians and concertgoers.

£22.50Edward Gregson: Concertante for Piano and Brass Band
DescriptionProgramme NoteThe Concertante for Piano and Brass Band was written in 1966, when the composer was an undergraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. It received its first public concert performance in 1967 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, when the composer was the soloist with the International Band of the Salvation Army, conducted by Bernard Adams. It was one of the first major works to be written for this particular combination.The Concertante is unashamedly romantic in idiom and is in three movements: Prelude, Nocturne and Rondo. The Prelude is cast in sonata form and opens with a short cadenza-like flourish from the soloist, followed by two main ideas - the first sweepingly dramatic, the second highly lyrical. The interplay between these two themes forms the main focus of the movement, and after a return to the opening theme, an exuberant codetta brings the music to a close, albeit a quiet one. https://morthanveld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Gregson-Concertante-1st-movt-clip.mp3The tender Nocturne opens with an introduction from the band that contains precursors of the two main ideas to follow. The solo piano announces the main theme, which has a slightly 'bluesy' character with its flattened third and seventh notes of the scale, and is a love song dedicated to the composer's wife-to-be. The band enters with phrases of a chorale already hinted at in the introduction - Ray Steadman-Allen's hymn tune 'Esher' - but never quite presented in its complete state. Both ideas are developed alongside each other, with eventually the first theme returning, this time with piano and band together, and building to a majestic climax, before subsiding to a peaceful coda - a return to the very opening of the movement. https://morthanveld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Gregson-Concertante-movt-2-clip.mp3The final Rondo is full of energetic rhythms and changing time patterns. The main theme is playful in character, with much interplay between soloist and band, whilst the middle section presents a new theme, and one that has more than a hint of the hymn tune 'Onward Christian Soldiers', in what amounts to a good humoured parody. The opening Rondo theme returns, this time leading to a powerful and dissonant climax from the band. This work was composed in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the birth English Composer Sir Edward Elgar. The suite is in three movements: 'Introduction', 'Elegy' and 'March', each of which have been inspired by three of Elgar's most celebrated works; Chanson de Matin, Nimrod ('Variation IX' from the Enigma Variations) and Pomp and Circumstance No.1.'Introduction' - Hollybush HillHollybush Hill is the name of one of the peaks of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. The Malverns were a favourite walking area for Elgar and his wife, and their panoramic views inspired much of Elgar's music.'Elegy' - BroadheathBroadheath is the small village at the foot of the Malvern Hills where Elgar was born (and lived at various times throughout his life). Elgar is buried not far from Broadheath at St Wulstan's in Little Malvern. 'March' - Worcester CathedralMany of the Worcestershire ensembles and music festivals played an important role in Elgar's early musical education. He was heavily involved in The Three Choirs Festival and either conducted or played in many of the light orchestras and vocal groups that performed at venues across Worcester. A statue of Elgar overlooks the Cathedral at the end of Worcester High Street.An Elgar Portrait has been used regularly as an own-choice test-piece for Section 4 bands, and was also selected as the set work for the Swiss National Championships in 2007 as well as the Pontins Championships in 2008. The composer has slightly reworked this piece for the Section 4 Final of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 2020 and it's this version that should be performed at the contest. Written specifically with 4th Section bands in mind, this work delivers rich textural contrast, clear educational rewards, and a crowd-pleasing arc that moves from regal tradition to high-energy rock. The piece opens with a majestic herald, setting a ceremonial tone as a warm, mellow melody dialogues with bright, fanfare-like brass. From there, the music moves through three distinct stylistic worlds: a delicate, nimble variation inspired by the craft of Eric Ball's A Little Suite for Band; a smooth, lyrical ballad featuring the solo cornet and flugel horn; and a high-energy finale grounded in a driving 6/8 rock groove, bringing the work to a dramatic, cinematic finish. In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by Natalya Sats and the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a musical symphony for children. Drawing from various sources, he created Peter and the Wolf, a work designed to introduce young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra. Prokofiev conducted both the Moscow premiere in May 1936 and the first English-language performance in Boston in 1938. In this adaptation for brass band, Duncan Wilson has abridged the original 25-minute score into a concert-friendly 18-minute version. All core material and principal themes remain intact. While the full band represents the character of Peter, the arrangement suggests seating the four other main characters (Bird, Duck, Cat, and Grandfather) slightly apart from the main ensemble. To enhance the performance, players may choose to develop their characters using costumes and accessories.
