Dreadnaught - Frank H Losey - John Dutton

Frank Hoyt Losey (1870 - 1931) was an American musician, composer, and arranger of band and orchestra music. He is credited with over 400 compositions and 2,500 arrangements including his most recognized composition, the march Gloria.Losey was born in Rochester, New Jersey, and studied music at an early age, learning to play cornet, violin, and piano. He was a cornetist for local and regional bands until he suffered from lip paralysis which forced him to switch to trombone and euphonium. In 1902, Losey began composing and arranging music for Carl Fischer and became editor-in-chief of the Vandersloot Music Publishing Company. In 1919, Thomas Edison selected Losey to be the music adviser for Edison's phonograph company. He was also approached by Henry Ford to arrange music for the Ford Orchestra in Detroit. Losey died in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1931.

The Liberty Bell - John Philip Sousa - Robert Childs

The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American Independence. The actual bell was commissioned from the London firm, now known as, Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1752 and was cast with the inscription:"Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof"The bell was placed originally in the steeple of Independence Hall in Pennsylvania and historically cracked the first time it was rung.Interest in the bell heightened across America in 1847 when it was claimed the bell was rung on the 4th July 1776 upon hearing the Second Continental Congress's vote for Independence. Despite the fact that this is undocumented and it is highly unlikely that the bell was actually struck on this date as it was in storage, the story was widely accepted and the bell was exhibited for many years at various expositions and patriotic gatherings across the United States.John Philip Sousa originally composed the march as part of an operetta score called, "The Devils Deputy" which, due to a lack of financing, was never completed. Sousa's manager George Hinton however, encouraged him to publish some of the music from the operetta as concert items, including the title-less march. While Sousa and his manager were attending the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, they watched a patriotic spectacle called "America" where the Liberty Bell was presented to the audience. Sousa's manager suggested that this would be a suitable title for Sousa's new march, to which Sousa agreed. This classic American march has been superbly arranged here for brass band by Dr. Robert Childs.

Radio City (Trombone Solo with Brass Band) - Graham, Peter

As youngsters growing up on the west coast of Scotland, my brother and I fell heir to an old valved radiogram which provided us with our first experiences of radio broadcasts. On the short wave signal, and through the static, we could pick up a whole range of programmes from across the Atlantic. I particularly recall the baseball games, the American accents of the announcers providing a window to a evocative world far removed from our small Ayrshire town. These memories form the basis of Radio City. The work is set in three movements, each introduced by a pastiche radio announcer narrative written by Philip Coutts. The first, City Noir, is a nod towards Raymond Chandler's eponymous private eye Philip Marlow and the dark cityscape of 1940s California.Movement two, Cafe Rouge, takes its title from the main restaurant in New York's famous Hotel Pennsylvania. Two of the most famous band leaders of the 1940s, trombonists Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, broadcast live from the cafe on numerous occasions and the movement echoes with a collage of imagined sounds from the period. The finale, Two-Minute Mile, derives from an event dubbed in the USA as "the most exciting two minutes in sport", namely the Kentucky Derby. The virtuoso soloist figurations have their roots in Kentucky bluegrass fiddle music, with the galloping bluegrass clog-dancing rhythms providing the backdrop.- Peter Graham, Cheshire, January 2013
