VIEW SCORE PDF The music within this piece by Canadian composer Marcus Venables portrays the image of a victorious and triumphant call - the battle's won and the victor proclaims supreme authority. As with any ruling authority and power, the growing opposition rise to conquer. After the opening fanfare and a call of victory, the music portrays the lavishness of victory with this driving sense of impending conflict. Once again, the victor must go to war and battle the threats. The music continues to express the sorrow and the loss that comes with being the victor. With sacrifice and pain, the victor now grows in passion and motivation to once again conquer the enemies. With a final swift battle, the victor calls out to claim supremacy once again. Championship Section Test Piece for the 2016 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championship.The Lone Wolf of the title is the great Hungarian composer and folklorist Bla Bartok. Bartok's journey took him from the hills of the Balkans to the heart of the new world. His singular vision may have meant a life out in the cold, a life without warmth and love, a life without true happiness, a death mourned by a few in a strange land.The first of the three linked movements is capturing the Peasants' Song and follows the young Bartok and fellow composer Zoltan Kolday as they embark on Summertime adventures through the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishing variety of Gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkan hills. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartok's beloved Hungary into chaos.Bartok was at times a cold man, aloof and lonely. The occasional moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed in Night Music. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartok may have heard in the USA later in his life.Having been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America Bartok, the anti-fascist, felt isolated and angry. In the finale, Flight and Fight, we hear his longing for a simpler time of Gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes.Duration: 15.00

Music of the Spheres was commissioned by the Yorkshire Building Society Band and first performed by them at the European Brass Band Championships in Glasgow, May 2004. The piece reflects the composers fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. ('Harmonia' in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and thatthe planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notes form the basis of the sections Music of the Spheres and Harmonia. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the Big Bang itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called The Lonely Planet which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. Asteroids and Shooting Stars depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with The Unknown, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.Duration: 18:00

Edvard Grieg (1843--1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. March of the Trolls is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short-tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households. Released in 1988, 'The Land Before Time' was made by the same film creators of 'An American Tail' and so, James Horner and Will Jennings were the obvious choice to create the movie's soundtrack, following the success of 'Somewhere Out There' (from 'An American Tail'). They didn't disappoint, and the main title track 'If We Hold On Together' became a success both on the screen and off when it was released as a single by Diana Ross in 1989. Now arranged by Gavin Somerset, this release will take a generation back in time to the story of Littlefoot, who embarks upon journey with 4 friends as they search for the Great Valley. Fakenham Fair - Traditional - A. Cook
The origins of the song Fakenham Fair are somewhat obscure. It was collected by Peter Bellamy, who performed it unaccompanied on his first solo LP, "Mainly Norfolk" in 1968, giving credit to a Peter Bullen of Norwich from whom he had learned it, Bullen in turn giving credit to his grandfather. But beyond that, other than it definitely being a Norfolk folk song, the rest is a mystery.Over the years, Fakenham Fair has become a firm favourite among folk audiences, probably the most famous version being the 2008 recording by folk supergroup 'Bellowhead' which this setting for brass band pays tribute to. A bright, quirky, and bouncy 5:4/10:8 waltz, the band parts dance back and forth from simple time to compound time and back again, giving a constant flow that somehow always feels natural despite the irregular rhythm... but which will also keep your audience guessing where the beat will land next! With solos and features for principal chairs around the band, nobody is left out of the fun. Engaging to listen to and even more so to play, Fakenham Fair is a perfect light concert item for the band that likes to show off their rhythmic and lyrical sides at the same time.
