Many people of a certain age will be familiar with When a Knight won his Spurs. A God-fearing Knight battling fearsome dragons and ogres really sticks in the memory, along with the fabulous folk tune.Prefaced by a mysterious opening derived from the melody itself, the tune appears a further three times, linked by a glittering fanfare. The folk feel of the original tune has been retained, and the piece drives along using a dual 3/4 - 6/8 time signature. The first statement of the tune is a conventional harmonisation; the second statement uses more colourful harmonies, and the triumphal final statement follows a dramatic upward key change. Dreams and Dances (Flugel solo) - Harper, P
Dreams and Dances was composed for Black Dyke flugel star Zoe Hancock in 2012. This is a substantial seven minute solo for one of the most characteristic of the brass band's instruments.It begins slowly and dreamily, with a flugel line encompassing both lyrical and florid styles, before moving via a short cadenza to a set of dances in a quick 6/8 time. The solo part would be a challenge for any player, but the accompaniment parts should be manageable by all.

COMPOSER: Neil LockThis march was submitted to the march composers' competition for "Bandamonium 3"in Hatherleigh, Devon in July 2024. The winning march was played by massed bands at the conclusion of the celebrations on Saturday 27th July 2024. Unfortunately, this march took second place in the competition, behind the march of Paul Pennicotte-Henrie, conductor of Okehampton Silver Band.The march can be played with or without the singing. (Even at the Whit Friday marches, begad!) I suggest that it should be introduced by 3-beat rolls.When played with singing, the "Bandamonium" lyrics (bars 10-13 and 56-57) are to be sung by all players, keeping to their own parts, with appropriate octave adjustment for their individual singing voices. Conductor and percussionists should sing with the main theme (Db and C at bars 10-13, F at 56-57). Listen to the 3rd cornet players!There is an additional part for Singers, in which the trio melody (bars 58 onwards) can be sung by Soprano and Tenor singers at a moderate choir standard. An octave-down option is also provided in the higher bars. This part can be given to "spare" singers within the band, or to singers external to the band if opportunity permits. Unsquare Dance (Score & Parts) - Dave Brubeck
Dave Brubeck, the American jazz pianist, has contributed a huge amount of material to the genre, responsible for many titles now so often referred to as 'jazz standards'. His Unsquare Dance (in 7/4 time) of 1961 has been expertly arranged for brass band by Mark Freeh. Brass Band Grades 1 & 2: Novice and Learner bands. Duration: 4 minutes.

Chorale Prelude
This stately work is very loosely based on the opening chords from 'The Lamb', although there are no direct quotations from that work. The opening chorale is played as gradually more themes are added above in a dignified and legato subject where instruments sustain notes to give a lingering echo effect. Players need to be aware of their role in this to maximise the effect. The second subject increases the intensity until the time signature change introduces a second chorale. Then, a short imitative passage leads to a rising appogiatura theme and the climax of the work, which re-introduces the original chorale in a major tonality. With versions for brass ensemble, brass band, wind orchestra and woodwind orchestra, this work has been placed in concerts when a meaningful, reflective moment is required.

This single from Ritchie Valens from 1958 is originally a Spanish song from Mexican folklore. Years later it was picked by Rolling Stone magazine as the only non-English song in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list at number 345. In 1987 it was covered by the American band Los Lobos, for the film La Bamba, about the life of Ritchie Valens. This arrangement has been made for flexible setting, and is suitable for a developed student band.

Sa ta mitt hjerte - Moldestad-Ditlevsen - Idar Torskangerpoll
This is a tune by Sigrid Moldestad (b. 1972), a Norwegian folk artist. She has based it on a warm and beautiful poem by Danish author Tove Ditlefsen. A text for and about love.Sigrid Moldestad won the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian equivalent to Grammy) in 2005 as a part of the group Gamaltnymalt. She won the price two years later, this time as solo artist for the record album Taus. Both times in the Folk Music category.So Take My Heart was released in 2012 as a part of the album Himlen har sove bort morkret.

Walk on By - Bacharach-David - Haakon Esplo
"Walk on By" is an American song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was written for Dionne Warwick. Her recording was released in April 1964 to great success.It reached a sixth place on the American Billboard Hot 100 list and a first place at Cashbox 'R & B. The song was a short time on Top 10 on the Billboard Easy Listening List. Warwick also recorded a German version entitled "Geh vorbei".Like many of Warwicks Bacharach-composed songs from the 1960s, many cover versions were made.
