2016 National Championships Regional Testpiece - 3rd Section.The novels by Jules Verne have been a rich source of inspiration for composers over the years. Graham has taken elements of the epic work Around the World in Eighty Days as the outline for a series of adventures recorded in an imaginary diary by the hero of the story, Phileas Fogg.Commencing with London bells in the background, the ensuing journey takes our hero by boat train to Paris (passing the Moulin Rouge en route), Russia (where he is chased by Cossacks), Vienna at night, Spain (where he is a spectator at a bull fight) before a final circumnavigation by sea (where we hear hints of foreign lands) brings him back to London with rich memories of his trip.The Journal of Phileas Fogg was commissioned by Dr Nicholas Childs for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain and was first performed by them in July 2012, conducted by Dr Robert Childs.

Finale from Symphony No. 2 (The Resurrection) - Mahler, G - Harper, P
One of the most life-affirming pieces of music ever composed, Mahler's 2nd Symphony, subtitled 'The Resurrection', was first performed in Berlin in 1895. Mahler's interest in the mysteries of the afterlife is well-known and is a recurring theme throughout all his nine symphonies. Philip Harper has arranged the final passages of the 2nd Symphony, which begins with a profound hymn set to the words of Friedrich Klopstock-- 'Rise again, yea, thou shalt rise again'.The music contains one of Mahler's magical transitionary passages, building in intensity, before the hymn is restated in all its majesty at the moment of glorious resurrection. From the mysteriousness of the seabed, the awakening of the beast, an exciting chase ensues as you evade capture. The work is full of excitement and energy, balancing myth alongside a cinematic sound world. Originally composed in 2017 for Jaren Hornmusikkforenig , Escape the Kraken! was the finale of the concept programme Twenty-Thousand Leagues Beneath the Sea . The work is published here in its 2019 revision, as performed at the Brass In Concert championships by the Flowers Band in their award-winning programme Captain Nemo's Forgotten Journal. Legacy of Light was commissioned by the family of Howard Bland, Honorary Secretary of Wessex Band Summer School for many years. Rather than a work in a reflective style, the brief was to provide a work which celebrated his life - energy and music which would be fun to perform and listen to. The bubbling compound time signature combined with the cornet and tuned percussion ostinato to open provide immediate impact with the work's subsequent soaring melodies and joyous style a fitting tribute. The work received its world premiere by the joint forces of the brass and wind bands at the 2024 Wessex Band Summer School, conducted by Michael Fowles.

The song was also a No. 11 hit on the Pop singles chart in 1973. In March 2005,Q magazineplaced the song at number 95 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has reportedly said that Elliott Randall's guitar solo on "Reeling In the Years" is his favorite solo of all time. That solo was also ranked the 40th best guitar solo of all time by the readers ofGuitar Worldmagazine.

£191.00The Maestro - Andrew Pearce
The Maestro, a concertino voor trompet en band, was commissioned by Philip Cobb, principal trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra. I spent most of Summer 2011 in Prague and London composing this demanding piece, for this was a wonderful opportunity to write a large scale work for one of the world's finest Trumpet virtuosos and I accepted the assignment with great enthusiasm. I also felt a great responsibility to deliver a tour de force for this world class player that was both challenging and enjoyable. Phil was seeking melodies and themes in the piece and had enjoyed my album 'Cinema Symphony', and the dramatic vistas it conjured up. Before writing began, I listened to his beautiful album 'Life Abundant' many times, ensuring I had his sound in my head while writing. The piece represents the many aspects of a contemporary trumpeter's musical life from; brass band chorale (a homage to Phil's musical roots), to the symphonic concert hall to the film recording studio. I am delighted to have had Phil and the International Staff Band record this work under the baton of Dr Stephen Cobb. Its a tour de force not only for the soloist but also for the band and should be an exciting challenge for the very best bands out there.
