GREAT GATE OF KIEV, The (from Pictures at an Exhibition) (Brass Band) - Mussorgsky, Modest - Littlemore, Phillip

Modest Mussorgsky was a close friend of the young artist and architect Victor Hartmann, and his death in 1873 plunged Mossorgsky into a deep depression. The following year a memorial exhibition in St. Petersburg displayed Hartmann's paintings, costumes, architectural designs and sketches. Mussorgsky's visit to it, combined with his desire to write a piece in his friend's memory, inspired him to compose hisPictures At An Exhibitionfor piano. A suite of ten movements, with a recurring Promenade theme, it is one of the composer's most famous works and regarded as a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It is perhaps the orchestral transcription made by Maurice Ravel in 1922 that is now the most famous version of it. This arrangement opens with a brief excerpt fromThe Hut on Fowl's Legs, which was based on a painting of an elaborately carved clock depicting Baba Yaga, a horrible tiny witch that feasts on human bones. The tenth, and final picture in Mussorgsky's masterpiece is commonly referred to asThe Great Gate of Kiev, although it's literal translation is The Bogatyr Gates ??" a Bogatyr being a hero figure in medieval East Slavic legend. It features a grand main theme that is interspersed with a more solemn hymn-like secondary theme. The work closes with a grand final rendition of the Promenade theme that almost grinds to a halt at what must be the foot of what were to be magnificent ceremonial gates (although they were never actually built!). Coronation Scene - Modest Mussorgsky - Phillip Littlemore

Few operas have had such a remarkable history as Mussorgsky’s masterpiece Boris Godunov . It exists in no less than three complete versions by the composer himself, as well as posthumous editions and orchestrations by Rimsky-Korsakov (from which this arrangement is taken), Shostakovich and others. The Coronation Scene is set in the Square of the Moscow Kremlin, between the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Cathedral of Archangel Michael, the year is 1598. After being crowned as Tsar, Boris Godunov acknowledges the people’s acclamations and the bells of the two cathedrals, as well as many churches within the vicinity, can be heard ringing out across St Petersburg. Danse Lithuanienne - Rimsky-Korsakov - Lee Rogers

Mlada was the vision of Stepan Gedeonov in 1870 originally to be performed as a ballet, however it was not until two years later in 1872 that four of the most famous Russian composers were brought on board to score the music for the production (Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov and Aleksandr Borodin being the composers in question). Much of the score was created, however the ballet never saw a production and no workable edition is currently in use. Lee Rogers has taken the light hearted 'Danse Lithuanienne' from Rimsky-Korsakov's part of the score and arranged it for brass band. The work requires dexterity from the band and is the perfect showpiece to add to any programme.

Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog - Ben Hollings

Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog was commissioned by Leigh Baker and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Band, for the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead. The theme of the programme was a modern take on Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition', where each piece was based upon a painting. Mussorgsky's Promenade theme can be heard as a motif throughout the piece and is interwoven with original thematic ideas. The piece was inspired by a painting entitled 'Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog', and explores the theme in a variation of styles, including a slow and tranquil opening, which builds into a fast, loud and exciting finale.

Monet on the Embankment - Paul McGhee

Monet on the Embankment was commissioned by Leigh Baker for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's performance at Brass in Concert 2014, where it received the prize for best new composition/arrangement.Monet on the Embankment takes Claude Monet's Houses of Parliament collection as it's inspiration, a total of nineteen canvases, which were the same scene - all studies in changing landscapes. While the Parliament series has Westminister Palace, it is so distorted by the fog and smog that it becomes secondary as the subject - as we see not just the effect of light on objects but also the effect of light on the atmosphere itself. It is these distortions of light that the I have aimed to create in my piece, by using muted effects, various percussion instruments, extreme registers and dynamics as well as incorporating quarter-tones to further distort the harmonic picture. Whilst looking to the past for inspiration through Mussorgsky's 'Promenade', the music most definitely looks to the future, aiming to place the setting for Monet's masterpiece's firmly in the present.Paul McGhee
