Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempoconcert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, "Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to." It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland. Duration: 5-6 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION:1 EflatSop. Studio-Pop - Kees Vlak
Studio-Pop consists of five movements. The first movement, entitled Marching on a String, is an energetic rock march in a modern rhythm. Next, the charming Dreaming of Summer has been composed in three-four time - which is quite unusual in modern pop music. The inspiration for the third movement, Chicken-Charley was a youngman selling chicken legs from a stall. His supple, dancing movements can be recognised in the music. The fourth movement, Candlelight is a modern, attractive ballad. Finally, Discoteca takes us along on a night visit to a Spanish discotheque. The typically Spanish chords and the stirring, high-spirited rhythm provide an exuberant closing to Studio-Pop.

First Jazz - André Waignein
First Jazz, a fine swinging piece, was written by Roland Kernen, who is the composer and arranger of a great deal of successful concert band music. The music of the Caribbean is a mixture of styles encompassing traditions that reflect the nature of its many islands and ethnic groups which inherited a multitude of rhythms imported by slaves from West Africa. Europeans brought with them Western-style melodies and harmonies, still used today in Trinidadian calypso, a traditional folk genre which gained worldwide popularity thanks to internationally famous artists such as the American singer Harry Belafonte (Calypso, Island in the Sun, Day-O/Banana Boat Song). Fascinated by this music which embodies the very spirit of exoticism, Roland Kernen composed Caribbean Calypso, a composition with softly swaying rhythms whichfollow a gentle and subtle melodic line in a rum and cigar-flavoured atmosphere.

Before his untimely death in 1988, Dutch composer Rogier van Otterloo became well-known for the film music he wrote to various successful Dutch movies. In this medley, made by his youngest son, Thijs van Otterloo, the themes of Help, de dokter verzuipt! (Help, the Doctor Is Drowning!, 1974) and Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange, 1977) have been used, as well as Esther (from Soldier of Orange). A fantastic trip into the field of world cinema music.

Commissioned by Manger School Band and their conductor (at that time) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. He wanted a calm, slow piece of music. Nocturne means 'night music'. It does not reflect a particular dream, but the feeling you get when you?re day-dreaming: you are in the middle of beeing awake and asleep. Geschreven in opdracht van Manger School Band en hun dirigent (op dat moment) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. Hij wilde een rustig, langzaam stuk muziek. Nocturne betekent 'nacht muziek'. Het gaat dus niet een bepaalde droom, maar het gevoel dat je krijgt wanneer je aan het dagdromen bent: je bent in het midden van wakker zijn en slapen.
