Holst's suite The Planets was written between 1914 and 1916 and with the exception of Mercury, which was written last, Holst wrote the music in the sequence we hear them. So, in 1914, came the insistent rhythmic tread of Mars, The Bringer of War. It is widely known that the sketches were completed prior to the outbreak of the First World War, so the music is less a reaction to the declaration of war itself, but more an impending sense of inevitability of a war to unfold. An ideal concert opener, especially in this current year as it is not only the 100th anniversary of the piece itself, but of The Great War. Duration: 7:20

French composer Paul Dukas wrote his symphonic poem, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, between 1896 and 1897. Subtitled 'Scherzo after a ballad by Goethe', the piece was inspired by Goethe's 1797 poem of the same name. By far the most performed and recorded of Dukas' works, perhaps it's most notable appearance was in the Walt Disney animated film Fantasia from 1940, which led to the piece becoming widely known to audiences outside the classical concert hall.. The original orchestral work is some 10 minutes in length, however this brass band transcription has been abridged to create a more manageable 6-minute work, yet retains the urgency, magic and colour of the original. The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008.
