The Poseidon (Bra) - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich
In Greek mythology "Poseidon" is the god who reigns over the sea, the waters and their gods. The opening of this work reflects the power of Poseidon. He could turn a calm sea into a rough and turbulent sea that swallows up ships. With his famous trident he can generate an earthquake, hence his nickname "Earth Shaker". Every living being is afraid of him, including his wife and children. Deep inside, however, he feels lonely. The middle part of this work shows the other side of Poseidon as a normal person who desires for love and understanding. However, this sad but sweet theme doesn't last long because its angry character resurfaces. He starts again to use his power in an aggressive way and the powerful opening theme is repeated. After "A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle", this is the second work in which the composer has drawn her inspiration from her favourite seascape painting by the Belgian painter Romain Steppe (1859-1927).

Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontyovich composed this famous Christmas Carol in 1914. The carol is based on a folk chant called Shchedryk. The composer was a supporter of the independence movement in Ukraina, and was assassinated by a Soviet agent in 1921.The carol was made famous after the adaption by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936. Wilhousky worked as an arranger for the NBC symphony orchestra. It is also well known from popular culture, like the film Home Alone (1990), and a version by the vocal group Pentatonix.Duration: 2.30

Edvard Grieg (1843--1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. March of the Trolls is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short-tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households. The Canticle of the Sun was commissioned by Birmingham Symphonic Winds conductor Keith Allen for Simone Rebello. The work is based on the canticle written by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) whose ideas that nature and the material world were gifts from God and should be valued and appreciated. The brass band version was made especially for a studio recording by the Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas J. Childs with Simone Rebello on percussion. Duration: 13.00

Abaddon was commissioned by the NLBB (Noord-Limburgse Brassband - North Limburg Brass Band) from Belgium. Abaddon is the demon reigning over the underworld. In the New Testament - in the Book of Revelation by John (9:11) - he is called the angel of the bottomless pit. The work Abaddon lives up to its name. Technically and physically, it holds an enormous challenge for every band in the champions division. The composition has a traditional form structure (fast-slow-fast), and it consists of ornamentations around the letters IVAN, after Ivan Meylemans, the conductor who since 2001 has obtained great successes with the NLBB, and who in this case has also been essential in taming the demon in Abaddon.Suitable for Championship Section BandsDuration: 14:15

Arranged for the Leyland Band's 2010 Brass in Concert programme. This is a sumptuous, lyrical setting of Scottish folk singer-songwriter Archie Fischer's originally up-beat song, with solos for baritone and cornet. The words tell the story of an ancient knight wounded in battle and dying on the battlefield who is healed by a mysterious old lady appearing from across the moors and swiftly vanishing again.The original version was sung by, amongst others, Barbara Dickson who has said she is a big fan of Philip's sensitive arrangement.Duration: 4.15

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands, with Handel and J.S. Bach, as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular, he was without doubt, the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works, including forty-nine operas, he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement, Largo, portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This arrangement for brass band retains all the warmth of the original.Duration: 3:45
