I first heard of the song National Express, which was in the British Top Ten in 1998, when my son Jon mentioned it last year. It was written and sung by Neil Hannon, with his group "The Divine Comedy". Jon said that it would sound good played by a brass band. Tim Benson, solo trombone with Stannington Brass Band, also mentioned it on the internet forum, themouthpiece.com I spoke with Tim, and agreed to do a brass band arrangement with a special feature for solo trombone. In this arrangement, the solo trombone adds extra colour to a band arrangement which is a mixture of big band and country style. The trombone part is well within the capabilities of a good player. There is a comic element to this song, and the cornets and flugel contain an eight bar spoken part, which, if included, would enhance it's entertainment value.Tim Benson took the music to rehearsal at Stannington Brass Band and it instantly became a hit with the band who left whistling the melody. The piece not only retains the fun of the original, but it cleverly uses the band, and a bit of additional vocals from the cornet section. DIFFICULTY: 1st+. DURATION: 4'00". 'Agrabah Sunrise' was composed for the Foden's Band's Aladdin themed programme at the 2023 Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Glasshouse, Gateshead. The music uses a traditional Western Asian Raga called 'Bhairav' - traditionally practised in the early hours of the morning - as it's base and features extensive technical solos for Soprano, Cornet, Tenor Horn and Euphonium.

£30.00Abrazo - Lucy Pankhurst
Lucy Pankhurst wrote this piece in response to an open request from Jim Hayes, when he asked for new solos to perform. Abrazo was then selected to feature on his solo CD Dial M for Midnight.The title Abrazo translates as 'embrace', but is also the term given to the dancing frame of the Tango; where the partners change stance by pulling and pushing the frame, yet always remaining in physical contact with each other. This technique is suggested in the music by the soloist breaking away from the band with virtuoso interjections, before being 'embraced' again by the full band.When the cornet soloist eventually breaks completely free in the cadenza passage, the music becomes much more agitated and moves away from the original Tango, transforming briefly into a Flamenco to finish with a flourish.

Ocean of Storms or Oceanus Procellarum is one of only a few lunar maria or 'seas' on the moon's surface to be called an ocean, due to its immense size. The work opens atmospherically with a sense of weightlessness and introduces the main thematic idea. As the work develops the turbulent ebb and flow of the storm increases in its ferocity with solo spots for solo cornet, solo euphonium, flugelhorn and baritone. Duration: 00:05:45 Grade: 6

£34.95Gaudete - Christopher Bond
Gaudete is a sacred Christmas carol, which is thought to have been composed in the 16th century, but could easily have existed as a monophonic hymn in the late medieval period. Within the lyrics, there are references to Christ, Virgin Mary, Grace, Ezekiel and Salvation. This arrangement takes the striking tune and re-works it for Soprano Cornet and band, transforming the melody in places, whilst also keeping that familiar tune in its original form. Gaudete was recorded by Steve Stewart & Cory Band in 2016, featuring on its album 'A Festival of Fanfares & Carols'.

Meditation on O Come, O Come ImmanuelThe Advent hymn we all know today as O Come, O Come, Immanuel was arranged in its modern form by Thomas Helmore and published in Hymnal Noted in 1856. Both the words and melody, however, predate this version by centuries. The words are based on a 9th century antiphon and the tune, Veni Immanuel, is taken from a 15th century processional of French Franciscan nuns, part of the setting for the funeral hymn Libera Me. This arrangement aims to expand on the power and mystery of the original tune and will be most effective if the solo cornet at the start and end of the piece can be placed away from the band, maybe at the back of the auditorium.Duration: 6:00

This work was written by Morley Calvert, the Canadian composer, especially for the first European Brass Band Championships held in 1978.The piece consists of three contrasting movements. The Introduction opens with a slow, mysterious figure after the first fanfare-like unison notes. This leads to the main section, a quick 'one-in-a-bar' movement centred around a persistent figure.The Elegy opens with an unaccompanied Euphonium solo, which is then passed through to horn, cornet, and basses in the manner of a passacaglia. This is broken and then the movement fragments.After the tension of the Elegy, the Caprice provides much needed relief: a spritely dance, very rhythmical in character, the theme of which is thrown around the band with great abandon.
