The intensity builds with Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King before lifting into the brightness of Vivaldi's Spring. Momentum continues through a thrilling sequence featuring Beethoven's Ode to Joy from Symphony No. 9, the dramatic fate theme from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and the majestic power of Saint-Saens's Organ Symphony. It constantly changes in colour and shape.2. Rocks (Moderato ben ritmico)I denne satsen er tittelen et ordspill. Ordet "rock" er velkjent i musikken, men er ogsa en enorm stein eller del av et fjell.The title of the second movement is a play with the word "rock" is a well-known word describing a musical genre. But it is also a giant stone or a part of a mountain.3. Seascape (Allegro)I denne satsen forsoker jeg a fange ulike aspekter ved havet, samtidig som satsen samler opp musikalske ideer fra de to foregaende satsene. Denne satsen videreforer, oppsummerer og avslutter verket.The third movement is inspired by different aspects of the sea. A Road Less Travelled By was commissioned by Palangos Orkestras for the Championship Section of the 2020 European Brass Band Championships held in Palanga, Lithuania.The following was written by the composer, Philip Sparke:The title alludes to a poem by American author, Robert Frost, which appeared in his 1916 collection, Mountain Intervals: The Road Not Taken.In common with most of my larger works, this piece in not programmatic, but purely abstract; there is no extrinsic musical story. The choice of title shares my view of how composers can often develop. There can be no 'destination' in a composer's career, but rather a continuing journey to an unknown place. From piece to piece a composer needs to decide his or her next steps, never really knowing where they might lead. As Frost so eloquently describes, these sorts of instinctive decisions guide all our lives.Set in three movements, which play without a break, A Road Less Travelled By opens with a Moto Perpetuo firmly rooted in classical language, form and syntax. A continuous river of semiquavers, veering from melody to accompaniment and back again, adds drive, every and motion. The second movement, Nocturne, is in the form of a free fantasia; solos for vibraphone, flugel horn and euphonium set the stage for a central cornet solo, quietly echoed by the full band. A triumphal climax is reached before the movement dissolves into a Scherzo Finale. Mercurial and quixotic in nature, this third movement starts jovially until trios for trombones and horns darken the atmosphere. A change of mood and meter leads to a reprise of the opening and a return of the cornet melody, this time accompanied by figures derived from the scherzo theme. A brief coda based on earlier material drives the piece to a close.Duration: 15.30

In Brother Bear, the young Kenai kills a grizzly bear to avenge his brother's death. Then he is magically transformed into a bear himself and he makes friends with the bear cub Koda. Together, they undertake a long, exciting journey in search of the mountain where Kenai can become human again. Meanwhile Kenai's remaining brother hunts them in order to avenge his family. Thus, the main themes of Brother Bear are brotherhood and friendship. On My Way gives voice to the courage and the determination that characterise Brother Bear. 'Night Flight' was composed for the Foden's Band's appearance at the 2021 Brass in Concert Championships held at The Sage, Gateshead. The band's theme encompassed a large range of monsters and creatures and this work depicts one of the most notorious monsters in folklore; Count Dracula. Throughout this short, virtuosic showpiece for Soprano Cornet and Euphonium, you can hear multiple strains of Mussorgsky's 'Night on a Bald Mountain' (with which Foden's Band opened their programme). . .
