Marble Halls | Balfe arr. Kevin Bell

'I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls', otherwise known as 'The Gypsy Girl's Dream' is a popular aria from the opera 'The Bohemian Girl' by Michael William Balfe. There have been countless recorded versions of the song, most notably recently by Irish singer Enya. This arrangement for Brass Band beautifully captures the lyrical quality of the song. After a gentle beginning the arrangement weaves between solo cornets taking the lead and full tutti band with broad harmonies. The continual pulse of this piece, which is in time, also allows space for rubato evoking the original writing as an aria. A vocal number lending itself very well to the brass band idiom.

La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid

DescriptionLuigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, into a musical family. His father, a cellist and double-bass player, sent him to study in Rome at a young age. In 1757 they both went to Vienna, where the court employed them as musicians in the Burgtheater. In 1761 Boccherini went to Madrid, entering the employ of Prince Luis Antonio of Spain, younger brother of King Charles III. There he flourished under royal patronage, until one day when the King expressed his disapproval at a passage in a new trio, and ordered Boccherini to change it. The composer, no doubt irritated with this intrusion into his art, doubled the passage instead, which led to his immediate dismissal. Then he accompanied Don Luis to Arenas de San Pedro, a little town in the Gredos mountains, where Boccherini wrote many of his most famous works. Although neglected after his death and throughout the 19th and early 20th century (he was known mockingly as 'Haydn's Wife' for a time), Boccherini's music has been rediscovered in recent decades.La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid('Night Music of the Streets of Madrid') is a string quintet of seven short movements composed during Boccherini's exile in Arenas, no doubt to remind him and his prince of happier times. The music is reminiscent of "the gaiety and bustle of Spain's capital, recalling the sound of the city's church bells ringing for evening prayer, the popular dances that were the delight of its young people, and the blind beggars singing their typical songs". This arrangement excludes the first and last two movements, comprising the middle four:Il Tamburo di Soldati(The Soldier's Drum)Minuetto dei Ciechi(The Minuet of the Blind Beggars)Il Rosario(The Rosary)Passe Calle(The Passacaglia of the Street Singers)The music was featured in the Russell Crowe filmMaster and Commander: The Far Side of the World(2003) set during the Napoleonic Wars and featuring the adventures of the Royal Navy ship HMS Surprise and her captain Jack Aubrey as they pursue the French ship Acheron into the Pacific Ocean. To view a PDF preview of the score click here.Duration approximately 5'00".

Mexican Hat Dance - Traditional - Roger Webster

The widely acclaimed Mexican Hat Dance became so popular that at one point it was declared the national folk dance of Mexico. Its popularity is attributed to the great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. After a visit to Mexico in 1930, she fell in love with the culture and spectacular costumes of the country, and decided to include the dance in her permanent repertoire. The ecstatic Mexican cultural authorities felt that such honour could only mean that the Hat Dance was indeed the most important dance in Mexico.Mexican Hat Dance was for many years inextricably linked to the charismatic trumpeter Rafael Mndez, whose flamboyant soloistic style was the inspiration behind this arrangement, which is also available from Prima Vista Musikk with piano accompaniment.

    Gollywog's Cakewalk - Debussy, C.

The last movement of Debussy's Children's Corner Suite, but only for the most gifted children to play, it evokes the innocent fun of childhood in the past. The Cakewalk was a popular dance with a complicated history, which became a vogue dance in the Parisian music halls of the time. Debussy composed more than a handful of these dances for concert performance.

Postcard from Mexico - H. Snell

I wrote Postcard from Mexico for a BBC TV contest, because I urgently needed a finisher to provide an exciting and powerful end to the programme. PFM did the trick and to my surprise immediately became popular with bands and audiences. I evoked the atmosphere of Mexican music with nods towards Aaron Copland, Chavez and Ginastera. However the responsability for most of it, particularly the rhythmic difficulties and the unusual drunken middle section, must be laid at my door. We grade it 2 and 3 because, while difficult, so many bands love to tangle with its problems.

    Joy to the World

Music for Brass Band Duration: 3:00 MinutesPercussion: 5 PlayersTimpani, Suspended Cymbal, Snare Drum, Tubular Bells and GlockenspielAll Rights ReservedProgramme Notes"Joy to the World" is a popular Christmas Carol with words by Isaac Watts. As of the late 20th century, "Joy to the World" was the most published Christmas hymn in North America. The words of the hymn are by the English writer Watts are based on Psalm 98, 96:11-12 and Genesis 3: 17-18. The version of this carol usually heard today is from an edition by Lowell Mason and is named "Antioch" and attributed as "arranged by Handel". This tune has the first four notes in common with the chorus "Lift up your heads" from the Messiah and the third line recalls "Comfort ye" from the same work. But this resemblance is often dismissed as a chance resemblance by Handel scholars today. Another theory is its similarity to a tune called "Comfort" and associated with Charles Wesley's hymn "O Joyful Sound", which was written some three years earlier than Lowell Mason's "Antioch" in 1833. This carol has been recorded by many artists such as Andy Williams, The Supremes, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Cash, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Vic Damone and Mariah Carey.
