£54.99Slavonic Rock March - David Well
According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.'

This dramatic piece is based on the famous oil painting by Jacques-Louis David, 'Napoleon Crossing the Alps'. There are three parts: Approaching the Great Saint-Bernard Pass depicting snowy mountains and the determined march of the NapoleonicArmy: The Emperor Napoleon a noble and heroic theme, accompanied by stately fanfares with an exotic flavour: and Onwards, to the Empire! describing Napoleon's relentless drive to expand the French empire across the globe at. This piecewas first performed directly in front of the Napoleon Museum in Arenenberg, Switzerland in Summer 2016.

1383: Festival March - Lead On! (Andrew Wainwright)A dynamic march, commissioned by Majors Paul and Dawn McFarland during their appointment as Area Commanders of The Salvation Army's Dallas-Fort Worth Area, premiered at the 2023 Thanksgiving service at the Dallas Adult Rehabilitation Centre. Featuring the classic hymns Storm the forts of darkness (S.A.S.B. 980) and Lead on, O King eternal (S.A.S.B. 964), the piece captures the drive, hope, and mission at the heart of The Salvation Army's work in North Texas.1384: Confession (Kenneth Downie)This arrangement is based on the tune Lord of all (T.B. 440), one of the welcome additions to the 2015 Salvation Army tune book. Introduced to the arranger by Andrew Blyth, whose appreciation for the melody highlighted its gentle charm, the piece is dedicated to Andrew and the Peterborough Citadel Band, where he served as Bandmaster and continues to play.The music pairs the tune with the reflective words of We have not known thee as we ought (S.A.S.B. 630), a hymn often used in worship as a moment of confession and heart-searching before God. Its inclusion encourages both performers and listeners to approach worship with humility and sincerity.Although labelled simply as "German traditional," the tune's graceful simplicity is immediately evident. This arrangement preserves that character while introducing subtle harmonic colour and developing the tune's rising fourth motif as a unifying musical thread. The gentle nature of the melody remains central throughout, with a slightly heightened energy in the fifth phrase carefully drawn out without disrupting the overall serenity. The sharing of thematic material between Cornets and Horns calls for smooth, unobtrusive ensemble playing, allowing the tune's beauty to speak naturally.1385: God in good (Stephen Hull) This arrangement brings together two much'loved melodies: Goodness of God, a favourite from the final years of the arranger's service as Divisional Music Director in the Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Division, and the simple, enduring chorus God is so good. Heard often at summer camps, the song's message stayed with him, eventually inspiring this thoughtful musical pairing that highlights God's unwavering goodness throughout our lives.1386: A march in time (Martin Cordner)Written to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Thetford Corps (UKI Territory), this lively march pays tribute to a legacy of faithful witness, joyful service, and a community moving forward in God's light. Premiered by Cambridge Citadel Band during the anniversary weekend, the piece weaves together three cherished songs: Marching on in the light of God (S.A.S.B. 968), Jesus, precious Saviour (S.A.S.B. 501), and Light up the sunshine in your heart.

I was contacted by conductor and friend Desmond Graham who wanted to have a traditional concert march composed to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of his band; The Third Carrickfergus Band.Immediately my mind started wandering as I thought about all the great marches that I have enjoyed playing and listening to over the years. So when I put pen to paper I had already planned out the structure of the march and which instruments to feature.The march itself is split into two halves, the first in a minor key the second in a major key. The opening section starting loudly in F minor features stereotypical passages one would come to recognise in a traditional concert march: a cornet solo, a melodic bridging section and a robust bass solo led by the basses and trombones.The second half of the march changes pace and mood as it lifts into a major key giving it a more lighter feel. We hear a second cornet solo which plays the second theme of the march. After a second bridge section the theme is played by the front row cornets to allow the soprano to play an obligato melody similar to that heard in marches like "Army of the Nile" and "Stars and Stripes Forever". It all builds to a grandioso ending where the tempo drops and the final theme is played with a quick accel to the end.As for the title? In Carrickfergus lies an old castle that faces the town which is situated on a small plot of luscious green grass - "On The Castle Green".Paul Lovatt-Cooper

This rousing march by Dave Collins is a dedication to the remarkable group of volunteers - the unsung heroes - who, each year, organise and run the iconic Whit Friday brass band contests. They ensure that the heritage and tradition of this uniquely special event is not lost, preserving its ongoing and continued success. However, this mighty contest simply could not take place without the willing volunteers who dedicate their services year after year to keep this unique banding tradition going.Traditionally, on Whit Friday Morning, Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud #1346), also known as Praise Ye the Lord, is heard across the Saddleworth villages. This is where I have taken my inspiration, and the entire march is built upon quotes and references of this joyous work.The Stewards has many traditional elements drawing on the vast repertory of well-known marches, as well as some untraditional techniques and harmonies. £33.83March - The Green Island (Brass Band) Espen Haukas
This march was written to mark the centennial jubilee of the renowed Manger Musikklag. The title for the piece comes from the many descriptions of the county Manger Musikklag originates from, on the island of Radoy. As the composer writes, 'It is a uniquely lush and beautiful landscape, which is echoed on the famously green trimmed jackets worn by the band at concerts and competitions. Radoy is not without reason called "the green island". With regards to the composition, I have not tried to reinvent the idea of a march. But rather to present my own take on its familiar style. The piece is meant to have a reassuring familiarity about it, whilst the ending will surely make the audience smile.' £33.83March - Helping Hands (Rob Bushnell) Brass Band
Helping Hands was written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). The piece is loosely programmatic in nature: The introductio is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands' anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. The second section (bars 35 to 52) sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section (bars 53 to 69) represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day. The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. The piece is influenced by marches that are commonly heard during the Whit Friday March Contests, using motifs, rhythms and harmonic progressions (sparingly) throughout the piece. March-card sized parts included, with alternatives for horns in F and lower brass in bass clef. (S.A.S.B. 41), this bright melody is contrasted with the tune Lydia associating the words There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth (S.A.S.B. 94).1349: I need thee (Craig Woodland)An expressive arrangement of the traditional hymn I need thee every hour (S.A.S.B. 707)1350: March - The great commission (Paul Sharman)This march was written for the Norwegian Christian brass band, Egersund Missionary Band, and is derived from the tune Onward, Christian soldiers (T.B. 188) as well as a brief fragment of the Norwegian National Anthem and the melody Die Sach is dein (The work is thine).

1359: Festival March - Coastal Celebration (Sam Creamer)Coastal Celebration was commissioned in 2019 by Nambour Salvation Army Band for the Corps' 125th anniversary celebrations. Nambour was the birthplace of The Salvation Army's work on the Beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Firring with this theme are subtle tributes to iconic Sunshine Coast landmarks, referenced with small phrases of popular secular melodies intertwined with the main tunes What a faithful God (S.A.S.B. 378) and All through the years (S.A.S.B. 826).1360: He's always been faithful (Craig Woodland)This meditative selection is an arrangement of the song by American singer and record producer Sara, Groves, He's always been faithful. The words express the joy and thankfulness in having a relationship with Jesus and knowing his presence in life. The melody and motifs of the traditional hymn, Great is thy faithfulness (S.A.S.B. 26), are heard throughout.1361: Christ's living water (Dean Jones)Christ's sacrificial love has been beautifully portrayed through the imagery of water in many songs, none more so that the skilfully crafted words we find in the chorus of I know a fount (S.A.S.B. 197), written by Oliver Cooke. To enhance the sentiments expressed, the pure sounds derived from Handel's Water Music fit perfectly in terms of music and imagery.1362: March - Fear Not! (Avelan Ntsiete)The Salvation Army continues to proclaim its music ministry in all corners of the world and, with this item under review, we introduce a new composer, originally from Congo Brazzaville, Central Africa. Avelan Ntsiete is currently a Bandsman at the Lilas Corps in Paris but has previously served in the Congo Brazzaville Territorial Band. This march, in traditional format, was written for an evangelistic campaign in Kindamba, where civil war has brought upheaval to the area and uncertainty for the local Salvationists. The composer was part of a small brass group which travelled for over 24 hours by truck and on foot to reach Kindamba and bring encouragement to the Salvationists within that community.
