CHALK FARM No.2 (Brass Band Set) - Edward Gregson
In 1909, The Salvation Army published a march called 'Chalk Farm'. 'Chalk Farm No. 2' was written to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Bandmaster Punchard, Bandmaster to Chalk Farm band for 50 years. The tune 'March on, we shall win the day' is common to both marches. The later march is symphonic rather than processional, including as it does irregular bars of 5 and 7 beats.

HIGH COUNCIL, The (Brass Band Set) - Ray Steadman-Allen
This march was written at the request of the then Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Arnold Brown for the welcome meeting of the 1974 High Council, a gathering of The Salvation Army's top leaders from around the world who meet to elect a new General. The scintillating music is filled with many wonderful and surprising shifts of key, rhythm and instrumental colour. Evangeline Booth's song 'The world for God' provides the international reference while at the trio's peak, the composer joins three tunes in impressive counterpoint; 'We're the Army' (cornets), 'A Robe of White' (horns and baritones) and 'Bound for Canaan's Shore' (trombones). The march ends with a dazzling shift into triple time and an impressive molto allargando codetta.

ROSEHILL (Brass Band Set) - Albert Jakeway
The Salvation Army Assurance Society Band was the first Salvation Army band to take part in the Lord Mayor's Show, in 1928. The Society relocated from London to Reading at the beginning of World War Two and the title of this march is derived from the name of the Reading property. Rosehill is a fine march containing all the drama and pyrotechnics that make it suitable for a Whit Friday type march contest.

This upbeat, foot-tapping march by Welsh composer Jonathan Mead features the two well known Welsh tunes of Aberystwyth and God Bless The Prince of Wales. Aberystwyth is set as a big bold bass solo and careful attention will need to be paid to make sure that it sounds clean and together. God Bless The Prince of Wales first appears as a traditional hymn tune, before returning in a more vibrant, lively style, with florid scalic passages for the solo cornets and euphoniums. The march was written with St David's Day in mind, although will be an appropriate addition to concert programme throughout the year as either an opener or finisher. VICTOR, The (Brass Band Set) - Kenneth Downie
Written for the Melbourne Staff Band, this march features the hymn tune, 'Millennium'. While the origins of the tune are unclear, it has a distinct character; from the opening rising fourth interval through to its conclusion, it embodies strength and vigour. The composer has hinted at the style brilliantly employed by the great Australian march writer, Arthur Gullidge, by opting for a minor key in the first section offset by a melodious trio section in a major key.

EXETER TEMPLE (Brass Band Set) - Leslie Condon
This march was written for the centenary of Exeter Tempe Corps in 1981 and first played in Exeter Cathedral during those celebrations. While the march is intentionally retrospective, the unashamed absence of modernity receives some splashes of colour from the styles of march 'kings' like Bramwell Coles, Arthur Gullidge, Albert Jakeway and George Marshall.

MINNEAPOLIS IV (Brass Band Set) - Emil Soderstrom
This march was the outcome of a request from Minneapolis IV Corps to write a march to celebrate its 60th anniversary. At the time of its writing, Soderstrom had become a leading arranger for NBC Radio in Chicago and had mastered many contemporary American styles. His lush harmonies remind one of Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and Rodgers while even the scoring suggests an American big-band of the swing era! These and other novel touches make the march interesting to listen to, as well as to play, over 60 years on.

ANTHEM OF THE FREE (Brass Band Set) - Dean Goffin
Prior to becoming a Salvation Army officer, Dean Goffin was the first Salvationist composer to gain a degree in music composition. This march was originally written for the 4th Brigade Band of the New Zealand Armed Forces (which Goffin conducted during World War Two) and called Bel Hamid before being adapted for Salvation Army use. The march contains the gospel song Ring the bells of heaven (...pealing forth the anthem of the free).

The Coronation March by the German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer comes from Act 4, Scene 2 of his grand opera, Le Prophete (The Prophet). Set in the 16th century, it is based on the life of John of Leiden, Anabaptist leader and "King of Munster", with the libretto influenced by the works of Voltaire. The 5-act opera deals with love, revenge and tragedy. It was premiered by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier on 16 April 1849, with audience members including Chopin, Verdi, Delacroix, Charles Dickens and Berlioz.During his life, Meyerbeer was a dominant figure in the world of opera, with Hector Berlioz saying of him 'he has not only the luck to be talented, but the talent to be lucky.' MARCH OF THE HOURS (Brass Band Set) - Emil Soderstrom
March of the Hours was first performed at Star Lake Music Camp in 1962 with the composer supplying an informative listening guide which was printed in the published score; "The phrases are of 12 crotchets each (three bars) signifying the 12 hours. Up to the trio, the music describes the headlong search for pleasure by the thoughtless. Abruptly, the trio brings 'I need thee every hour', but an episode employing the original theme pushes it aside until it reappears, this time against a background of chimes of the full hour (Westminster chimes). While the hour strikes 12, a paraphrase of the opening strains of 'When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more' is heard. Here the music stops, to be followed by the trumpet sounding (cornets and trombones) and the rest of the band responds with 'When the roll is called up yonder' with a final 'I'll be there'."
