Freaks! - Gavin Higgins
Freaks! was written for Lisa Sarasini in 2006 and first performed by her with Zone One Brass at the Royal College of Music, London. This tuneful and flamboyant showpiece was inspired by the Tod Browning film of the same name. The 1932 black and white cult classic was banned for many years due to its controversial morality issues and lead characters - real life side show 'freaks'. It is one of the most bizarre things to have ever come out of Hollywood. 'Scherzo No.1 (Sanguine)' was composed for the Reg Vardy Band's 2019 Brass in Concert Championships programme, which revolved around the 4 temperaments of Human Nature - a theory by the Greek philsopher Galen from 450 BC. Sanguine individuals are defined as being optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad or difficult situation. An extrovert, and someone that looks for the good in situations. They bring energy into a room and brighten people's life with their humour and cheerful nature. It is upon this definition which Scherzo No.1 is composed, with an optimistic and cheery feel to the music, with small interjections of anger and sadness soon giving way to the more upbeat music surrounding it. .

This single from Ritchie Valens from 1958 is originally a Spanish song from Mexican folklore. Years later it was picked by Rolling Stone magazine as the only non-English song in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list at number 345. In 1987 it was covered by the American band Los Lobos, for the film La Bamba, about the life of Ritchie Valens. This arrangement has been made for flexible setting, and is suitable for a developed student band.

Haexdonck - Guido De Ranter
This work was commissioned by the municipality of Kapelle-op-den-Bos on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of canon Jaak Muyldermans. Haexdonck is the old spelling of the present day region of "Oxdonk" where Jaak Muyldermans lived. In this three-part work the composer describes the different human aspects of canon Muyldermans' rich life. The first part, slow and dreamy, describes the writer/poet. The second dissonant part with much percussion describes his time as an army chaplain during the Great War. The third hymn-like part depicts his time as a priest. This work by Guido De Ranter, a newcomer to composition,is suitable for competitions or concerts.
