    El Camino Real (A Latin Fantasy) - Alfred Reed

    El Camino Real (literally "The Royal Road" or "The King's Highway") was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the 581st Air Force Band (AFRES) and its Commander, Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler. Composed during the latter half of 1984 and completed in early '85, it bears the subtitle: "A Latin Fantasy."The music is based on a series of chord progressions common to countless generations of Spanish flamenco (and other) guitarists, whose fiery style and brilliant playing have captivated millions of music lovers throughout the world. These progressions and the resulting key relationships have become practically synonymous with what we feel to be the true Spanish idiom. Together with the folk melodies they have underscored, in part derived by a procedure known to musicians as the "melodizing of harmony," they have created a vast body of what most people would consider authentic Spanish music.The first section of the music is based upon the dance form known as the Jota, while the second, contrasting section is derived from the Fandango, but here altered considerably in both time and tempo from its usual form. Overall, the music follows a traditional three-part pattern: fast-slow-fast.The first public performance of El Camino Real took place on April 15th, 1985 in Sarasota, Florida, with the 581st Air Force Band under the direction of Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler.This arrangement for brass band has been made by Frode Rydland.

    Concerto for Tenor Horn - Gareth Wood

    Gareth Wood's Concerto for Tenor Horn was commissioned by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation with additional funding from the Arts Council of Wales and the PRS Foundation. The work was written for Owen Farr and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.It is in a traditional three movement form demonstrating the agility and lyricism of the tenor horn. The soloist begins alone with a singing melody in 5/4 time, and is soon joined by the Eb tuba and solo cornet. The rest of the band later emerge, leading the music into a strident Allegro. After a short tutti the soloist takes charge and a dialogue of melodic and rhythmic ideas follows. After a brief return to the opening theme the movement closes with a flourish. The second movement is a true Adagio. A profound beginning, almost hymn like, leads into a gentle melody which builds into a large tutti for band. A rhythmic section follows, rhapsodic in nature ending in a return to the melody used at the very beginning of the concerto. After another short tutti section the movement gently fades away. The finale is a combination of technical fireworks and an almost latin melody, both soloist and band finishing with great aplomb!Gareth Wood's Concerto for Tenor Horn received its world premiere by Owen Farr and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales under the direction of Dr. Robert Childs during their Summer Course of 2006 at Bangor University's Pritchard-Jones Concert Hall, North Wales.

    GALACTICODYSSEY-A Constellation Suite - Journey to the Stars 1) AQUILA - THE EAGLE(magnifico) In Greek mythology Eagles were used to represent an ascension up to the heavens. The opening stanza depicts the wonder of such miraculous acts. A sense of grandeur and of the magnificence of the universe should shine through.2) DRACO - THE DRAGON(con fuoco) The "Celestial pole" or "Seat of Judgement" was guarded by the celestial serpent, the constellation Draco. As the marking indicates, this section should be played "with fire" and exuberance. 3) CYGNUS - THE SWAN(cantabile con calore) Swans are known for their swan-song, it was believed that these birds of regal grace sang only once in their lifetime, just before they die. "To be swan-like" is to greet death with a song of exceptional beauty and calm acceptance. This should be played in a spirit of contemplation with pathos and warmth. 4) DELPHINUS- THE DOLPHIN(capriccio) Dolphins are well-known for their agility and their capricious behaviour; many species will leap out of the water to view their surroundings. This 2nd Century by the astronomer Ptolemy. In this section the marimba emulates the sound of water along with the rain-stick; the rhythm of the raindrops must come through. This is followed by a more melancholic melody which should be played sweetly but sorrowfully; the impact of the elements leading to inward reflection. 6) ORION - THE HUNTER(minaccioso) The scoring here aims to suggest menace and conjures up the threat of the hunt. Bar 10 should be played with edge from the Trombones as the Hunter seeks out his victim. The 'rips' from the Tenor Horns & Euphoniums should emulate the French Horn. Bar 28 sees the commencement of the chase as the Hunter moves on his prey. At Bar 34 the percussion indicates danger is imminent: a sense of threat should cut through with the driving rhythm, a la bolero. This will be reinforced by a strict adherence to the beat, representing the remorseless persistence of the Hunter and the seeming impossibility of the prey's escape. As we move towards the climax of the music, Bar 49 begins with a series of semiquavers depicting stars appearing in the sky. This segues to a frenzied finale, the capture of the exhausted prey and the Hunter's victorious conclusion. should be performed with a sense of breathless joy with playfulness & humour as its key characteristics, as depicted by the tin whistle and timpani glissandos. 5) AQUARIUS - THE WATER CARRIER( tranquillo) Latin for "water carrier", Aquarius is one of the first-recognised constellations and was recorded in the 2nd Century by the astronomer Ptolemy.     Vivat! - Score and Parts - Tom Davoren

    VIVAT! was commissioned by Kapitol for the 2012 National Championship of Great Britain first section final as a celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The work is split into three contrasting sections that run continuously, with music derived from elements of Parry's coronation anthem I Was Glad. In Memoriam evokes the noble but gentle personality of the Queen's father, George VI. Opening with an atmospheric baritone solo (and later featuring solo horn, flugel, euphonium & solo cornet), the music explores themes of grief, sentimentality and hope. Coronation, a fanfare and subsequent theme, is grandiose in style capturing the spirit and excitement of British pomp and ceremony.The closing Jubilate is a celebration of life and family values, Vivat being the Latin for life or long live. The music passes through moments of tension, virtuosity, humour and jubilance before a finale constructed from connected musical fragments drawn from throughout the work, forming (for the first time) Parry's majestic I was Glad theme.

    Plus Ultra - Andrew Stevenson

    Plus Ultra was commissioned for the Intermediate section of the 2015 National Youth Championships of Great BritainPlus Ultra is based on the twelve labours of Hercules, in particular the tenth. During the completion of this labour, Hercules had to split a mountain apart and sail into an unknown part of the world. By splitting the mountain, he connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and formed the Straight of Gibraltar. One part of the split mountain is Gibraltar and the other is Monte Hacho. These two mountains taken together have since then been known as the Pillars of Hercules.The Pillars appear as supporters of the coat of arms of Spain. The motto Plus Ultra (Latin for further beyond) is closely associated with the Pillars of Hercules to mark the edge of the then known world. According to mythology, the pillars bore the warning "Non plus ultra" (nothing further beyond) serving as a warning to sailors and navigators to go no further.The music in Plus Ultra depicts the struggle of the tenth labour, the dividing of the mountain, the mystery of what lies beyond the known world and the triumphant return of Hercules after completing the task.
