ENGLISH PASTORALE (Brass Band Set) - Jones, Dean

2015 National Championships Regional Testpiece - 4th Section. Score and Parts. This piece realises a long-time ambition of the composer to write a descriptive piece in a pastorale style. The idea of depicting the seasons and reflecting some of the grandeur of the English scenery proved an inspiring source to write this 4 movement piece. After the dignified initial theme Heralding the Dawn is established, the piece moves naturally into Autumn on the Plaines, a light, joyful scene. Winter in the Dales has a more mysterious and contains a somewhat darker feel in the minor key while Spring on the Lakes is a flowing, scenic movement. Summer on the Quays starts with some exciting fanfare-like qualities initially from the Cornets and Trombones, but then extra impetus is provided from the whole band. The music moves then into a dynamic and resounding conclusion. Duration: 11:40

Lake of Tenderness - Ben Hollings

Ben Hollings provides a delicate, atmospheric concert work utilising extended harmony reminiscent of modern choral composers such as Eric Whitacre. The work is technically modest, consisting of sustained chords interspersed with moving crotchet lines and lyrical solo contributions, and is accessible to bands of all levels. The work takes its title from ‘Lacus Lenitatis’ - one of the Latin named basaltic plains on the earth’s moon, thought by early astronomers to be lakes. Atmospheric in nature, the music seeks to evoke imagery of the solitary moon in the still of space. As we all know, simple music is often the most effective, and this is certainly the case here. Hollings’ chordal and lyrical writing creates a truly beautiful work that would be welcome in any concert programme.Lake of Tenderness was commissioned by Dr. Robert Childs and premiered by Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the 2015 Brass in Concert Festival, at The Sage, Gateshead.

    Troldhaugen - Jonathan Bates

Troldhaugen was composed especially for Rosie Hughes, Flowers Band's Principal Horn and 2013 Player of the Year. This luscious solo for Tenor Horn, incorporates snapshots of ‘Morning' from Edvard Grieg's ‘Peer Gynt' as a basis for the work's melodic material, but with a tasteful added twist from composer Jonathan Bates who is himself an accomplished tenor horn soloist. The title takes its name from Edvard Grieg's house, located on the outskirts of Bergen, amongst idyllic countryside and lakes. The composer paints a musical picture of this beautiful Nordic setting through a wonderfully crafted lyrical addition to the tenor horn repertoire.

Pacific Dreams - Jacob de Haan

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this old colonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting "Pacific Dreams" Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrow streets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters around Sydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan of Hawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of "Pacific Dreams", he boards the Metro at Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, he wants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso : In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his "Pacific Dreams".Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is it home, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

    Lake of Tenderness-Score and Parts

Lake of Tenderness was commissioned by Dr. Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band as part of their 2015 Brass in Concert programme, in which a selection of new pieces were commissioned based on the various basaltic plains of the earth’s moon, thought by early astronomers to be lakes.Lake of Tenderness, named after the Latin ‘Lacus Lenitatis’, uses extended harmony to evoke imagery of the solitary moon in the still of space. The piece grows in texture and dynamic as if one were getting closer and closer to the Lake of Tenderness until the piece arrives at a thrilling climax. As the piece comes to an end the music dies away as if one were moving away from the moon, finishing with a final image of the full moon.Ben Hollings, January 2016
