Paint It Black - Mick Jagger & Keith Richards - Len Jenkins
"Paint It Black" (originally released as "Paint It, Black") was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and first released as a single on 6 May 1966. It became the Rolling Stones' sixth number one in the UK and has remained influential as the first number one hit featuring a sitar. The song came at a pivotal period in The Rolling Stones' recording history, a time that saw the song-writing collaboration of Jagger and Richards assert itself as the principal composers of the band's original material. Its lyrics are for the most part meant to describe bleakness and depression and describe the extreme grief suffered by one stunned by the sudden and unexpected loss of wife, lover or partner. It famously plays during the end credits of the film Full Metal Jacket. Beginning in the style of an ironic minuet, which can be by-passed by starting at bar 54 where the heavy rock beat takes over, the piece is interesting and within the capabilities of 3rd or 4th section bands. For those bands with a drummer and one percussionist, an alternative percussion part is provided.

Covent Garden - Len Jenkins - Len Jenkins
Cast your mind back to the Covent Garden of Eliza Doolittle and the activity of the dealers, porters, costermongers, and other staff around the market. In cinematographic terms the ideal setting for a set-piece dance routine to reflect the hustle and bustle of trade in the early morning. The market may have moved to Nine Elms, but the activity is still just as vibrant, so we called this piece Covent Garden to reflect the activity which we rarely see, but know exists, in a busy commercial flower, vegetable and food market. The music has a good strong theme which carries the activities, numerous and varied, not always without hindrance but always coming good at the end so that we have food on our plates, flowers to enjoy and a tradition preserved.

This descriptive work for brass band by Joe Galuszka depicts the horrors of war. War is all around us. Every day, another life is lost. Myanmar, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Colombia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. As time goes on, more and more countries are brought to the end of what is a diplomatic struggle - in where war seems to be the only option. 'War! Terror! Panic! captures the tumultuous and relentless nature of war. With driving rhythms, aggressive brass fanfares, and thundering percussion, the listener is immersed in the chaos of battle. Dissonance and clashing harmonies depict the discord that pervades war and takes us on a journey through the terror and panic that comes with the brutality of conflict. Remembrance (For Those That We Have Lost) provides a poignant and reflective interlude, allowing the audience to contemplate the human cost of war. Mournful melodies and expressive solos for trombone, euphonium and glockenspiel, convey the depth of sorrow and loss, serving as a powerful reminder of the toll war takes on individuals and communities. The final movement, Hymn for Peace and Hope is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the yearning for harmony - dissonance and conflict gradually give way to consonance and resolution. Infernal Ride - Phillip Littlemore
Infernal Ride is mercurial and virtuosic, reflecting the mad-cap chase of Ichabod Crane's final ride on his horse, Gunpowder, in the story by Washington Irving, namely The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Often an atmosphere of driven fear pushes the music forward, only briefly stopping for breath. The work closes with flourishes in rapid succession, perhaps with the hapless Ichabod meeting his unfortunate end!Brass Band Grade 5: 1st SectionDuration: 7 minutes.Infernal Ride has been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, and is available on the CD Penlee.

VARIATIONS ON 'MACCABEUS' (Brass Band Set) - Kevin Norbury
This set of variations was composed for the ISB's tour of Australia, New Zealand and Japan in 1995. Handel's majestic tune is associated with the great resurrection hymn 'Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son' and melodic fragments of the tune form the basis of the four variations. The tune is heard in its entirety at the beginning and near the end and the piece finishes with a vigorous coda.
