An atmospheric and descriptive work, Sea Pictures is in three sections. The quiet but very difficult opening describes the sea at dawn when all is still save for the cries of the early-morning gulls and deep movements of the sea itself. The sun rises and the next section pictures it glistening and sparkling on the waves. A school of playful dolphins passes. As they swim into the distance we are alone again with the sun and the waves. But there are distant rumblings; from far away a storm approaches. Cool breezes disturb the surface of the sea as it clouds over. And then the storm is upon us, turning the sea into the most awful force in all nature. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, it abates, leaving the sea once again serene in sunlight. All is calm but, as the work fades to a close, distant claps of thunder remind us that we are always at the mercy of the power and ficklesness of nature. Championship section. Duration 20:13

Commissioned by Katrina Marzella in 2008, this modern 'duet' for Baritone and Euphonium soloists with brass band accompaniment has been inspired by 'nature and environment' as its primary muse. The music takes the listener through 7 stages of environmental atmosphere, in its combination of sounds and effects. It is a very uplifting work and with the back-story in mind (see programme notes below), it makes for an incredibly effective concert feature.Programme notes from the composer, Lucy Pankhurst:There are 7 main sections in the piece :RainGerminationGrowthTransionSunshineRainstormRestThe work begins with Rain, symbolised by the rainstick and 'rain sounds' in the brass , which allows the themes to germinate. The 'roots' of the music themselves, are firmly established in the tonic (root Eb) and 5ths in the low brass, from which the solo lines eventually grow, using triads and 5ths.During Growth, the solo baritone and euphonium begin with separate melodies which begin to twist around each other (much like tree roots), interlocking to produce harmonies and counterpoint, complimenting one another and firmly keeping the music in Eb major. Muted cornets and trombones continue to play overlapping semiquavers, reflecting the raindrops as they fall from the trees and leaves.A brief interlude, featuring brass sextet drives the music back to its Germination stage - here, named Transion, as it grows once more, evolving into something new. The Sunshine section is a dance. Moving rapidly through different keys, the warm sunlight catches on the dewy foliage, creating dazzling moments of clarity and beauty.However, the change in conditions also lead to brief moments of uncertainty, as the various creatures tentatively reappear from their shelter to bask as the earth is warmed. Birdsong can be heard in the solo lines as the entire band join in the celebrations.The jollity does not last long, however, as a Rainstorm, more violent than the last , ensues - stopping the dance in its tracks. The tam-tam and bass drum signify thunder, crashing into the music abruptly. However, the music still survives and re-emerges from the storm, delicately but securely establishing itself into a new key (C major), before softly concluding with the two soloists in rhythmic unison as the rain subsides and the world is at Rest.

This highly descriptive work was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America and will be a terrific concert or entertainment contest item. The music paints the picture of the lives of a variety of different birds. The composer writes: 'When I began thinking about this project I was sitting in my office in the early morning, the sun having just risen. There was a gentle breeze and the only thing that I could hear (aside from my hungry whining cats) was the gentle song of the birds outside my open window. As much of my work is programmatic, almost like symphonic poems, this immediately gave me the image of a majestic sunrise with all types of birds fluttering about, almost as if out of an episode of Planet Earth. When I was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of America, I knew the project had to be something the ensemble could grab onto. Something they could see. Something they could relate to. There being so many types of birds in North America, I selected a handful to help tell my story... The scene where I came up with this idea seemed to be the perfect starting point. Sunrise, tiny chirps of Morning Birds floating around the twilight of dawn, swiftly moving towards the majesty of the sun cresting the horizon. A new day, the beginning of a story. As the sun rises higher in the sky, animal activity stirs, becoming lively and wild. The flowers have opened up to drink in the sun's rays, leaving them open to nectar-seeking Hummingbirds. Whizzing by at lightning speed, the hummingbirds journey from flower to flower, drinking their fill until the sun begins to set back over the horizon. When daylight fades, the enigmatic Owl floats silently through the sky. The wonder of these creatures comes not just from their beauty, but also from their mystery and their ferocity. We see images in pop culture of majestic white owls and marvel in their beauty... but to a mouse roaming the forest floor in the dark of the night, the terror of suddenly being dropped upon by a silent predator is anything but peaceful. In the dead of night, soft rolling clouds thicken as a storm begins to brew. With the ensuing rain also emerges the grotesque scavenging Vulture; marching along from carcass to carcass, tearing into the rotting leftovers of another predator's kill, gorging themselves until over-full. However, from this nightmare fuel of a bird, a new day awaits... As the dawn of another day approaches, you begin to hear the same morning birds you heard the previous day. When the light finally breaks the horizon, the soaring majesty of the Eagle drives us to the end of our story; an exciting journey told through the eyes of the winged creatures that paint the skies of North America. 1383: Festival March - Lead On! (Andrew Wainwright)A dynamic march, commissioned by Majors Paul and Dawn McFarland during their appointment as Area Commanders of The Salvation Army's Dallas-Fort Worth Area, premiered at the 2023 Thanksgiving service at the Dallas Adult Rehabilitation Centre. Featuring the classic hymns Storm the forts of darkness (S.A.S.B. 980) and Lead on, O King eternal (S.A.S.B. 964), the piece captures the drive, hope, and mission at the heart of The Salvation Army's work in North Texas.1384: Confession (Kenneth Downie)This arrangement is based on the tune Lord of all (T.B. 440), one of the welcome additions to the 2015 Salvation Army tune book. Introduced to the arranger by Andrew Blyth, whose appreciation for the melody highlighted its gentle charm, the piece is dedicated to Andrew and the Peterborough Citadel Band, where he served as Bandmaster and continues to play.The music pairs the tune with the reflective words of We have not known thee as we ought (S.A.S.B. 630), a hymn often used in worship as a moment of confession and heart-searching before God. Its inclusion encourages both performers and listeners to approach worship with humility and sincerity.Although labelled simply as "German traditional," the tune's graceful simplicity is immediately evident. This arrangement preserves that character while introducing subtle harmonic colour and developing the tune's rising fourth motif as a unifying musical thread. The gentle nature of the melody remains central throughout, with a slightly heightened energy in the fifth phrase carefully drawn out without disrupting the overall serenity. The sharing of thematic material between Cornets and Horns calls for smooth, unobtrusive ensemble playing, allowing the tune's beauty to speak naturally.1385: God in good (Stephen Hull) This arrangement brings together two much'loved melodies: Goodness of God, a favourite from the final years of the arranger's service as Divisional Music Director in the Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Division, and the simple, enduring chorus God is so good. Heard often at summer camps, the song's message stayed with him, eventually inspiring this thoughtful musical pairing that highlights God's unwavering goodness throughout our lives.1386: A march in time (Martin Cordner)Written to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Thetford Corps (UKI Territory), this lively march pays tribute to a legacy of faithful witness, joyful service, and a community moving forward in God's light. Premiered by Cambridge Citadel Band during the anniversary weekend, the piece weaves together three cherished songs: Marching on in the light of God (S.A.S.B. 968), Jesus, precious Saviour (S.A.S.B. 501), and Light up the sunshine in your heart.

It features the tunes We shall win (T.B. 455) and Storm the forts of darkness (T.B. 844) - the latter chosen for its similarity to the Australian national anthem in its opening two bars.2262: Festival March - Alleluia! (Kevin Larsson)Both hymns used in this march, This is my Father's world (S.A.S.B. 66) and All creatures of our God and King (S.A.S.B. 2), bought the composer comfort as he began to grapple with the ramifications of the global pandemic in 2020. Both songs talk about God's sovereignty over nature, revealing himself to us through the beauty and majesty of our world.2263: Prayer gently lifts me (Ty Watson)This is a simple arrangement of the chorus Prayer gently lifts me (S.A.S.B. 783). The piece was written to precede the opening prayer in a band programme.2264: What a Saviour! (Steven Ponsford)This devotional music explores the events of Good Friday, dramatically reminding us of words associated with familiar Easter hymns tunes.

£34.95SEASCAPES (Brass Band - Score only) - Steadman-Allen, Ray
Seascapes was commissioned for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1988.Seascapes takes its inspiration from the poem 'Cargos' by John Masefield. In the first movement, a gentle lyric theme, set against a pulsating background is contrasted with a dance. The dance reaches its climax and the music concludes with a quiet theme. The second movement has something of the nature of a sarabande, with a central section, which is a little lighter but retains a Spanish flavour. The composer adds a whimsical thought of his own that there may also have been a party of monks aboard. A variety of ingredients blend in the third movement: the coaster engines, the sea, some jovial shanty-music and the storm element through which the coaster steadily chugs.Suitable for Championship Section bands.

Across the Ocean (Bra) - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich
After "The Poseidon" and "A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle", "Across The Ocean" is the third composition that inspired Pimpanit by her favorite sea painting of Romain Steppe, a Belgian painter who lived in the 19th century (1859-1927). It depicts 3 different images of the sea connected to the emotion of sailors. The first part gives the mixed feelings between agitation and excitement reflecting the turbulent sea which is challenging for the sailors to discover the new land. The second part reflects the beautiful calm sea when the sun sets. That gives warm and romantic feelings but hidden with loneliness especially for the sailors who travel far away from home and miss their loved one. Then the image suddenly changes to the angry sea with rain and storm in the third part. To end the first part's theme comes back declaring that the adventure starts again!

Gospel Brass Machine
A funky upbeat piece that will go down a storm with both band and audience alike.Mark Taylor wrote the trumpet feature Scream Machine for a vinyl album of the same name released in 1985 by the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Featuring four 'screamer' trumpet parts, it was later published in a slightly simpler version called Brass Machine. This arrangement for brass band includes a middle gospel section.
