Match Day - Peter Meechan
Match Day takes itas inspiration from a night in May 2005, when the team I have supported from my childhood, Liverpool FC, won the European Cup in what was considered by many to be one of the greatest football matches of all time.The piece is not only inspired by a football match, but also takes its musical material from chants and songs that you will hear at 3PM on a Saturday afternoon at any football ground in the country.Match Day was written as a result of a commission from the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and their Musical Director, Bramwell Tovey, to whom the piece is dedicated.First performance:National Youth Brass Band of Great BritainBramwell Tovey - Conductor

Song of Hope is dedicated to my good friend Ryan Anthony (principal trumpet with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and his charity, Cancer Blows - a foundation set up to raise awareness and money to further the research that has helped give their family a hope for a future following Ryanas diagnosis of Multiple MyelomaUpon hearing the middle movement (simply titled aSonga) of my cornet concerto, Milestone, Ryan asked me if I could change the end from its current reflective ending to something more uplifting, and to title it Song of Hope, giving it much more meaning than I could have ever imagined.As well as a wind band scoring without soloist, Song of Hope exists with 1, 2 or 3 soloists, accompanied by either wind band, brass band, brass ensemble or symphony orchestra.For my friend Ryan.Each set comes with the soloist part for 1 soloist. These Mist Covered Mountains was commissioned by Keith Johnson (KMJ Recordings) for soprano cornetist, Mandy Crowther, to whom the piece is dedicated.In an age where we seem to be inundated with endless news cycles of various wars that we as a nation are involved in, and also those that we are not, it seems that war is now a constant, and we are in a never ending state.This short piece is intended to represent the cyclic nature of war, and the way that war never seems to have a true conclusion.

Modern Times is a concert suite from the musical and theatrical show Le Temps de Lyre, written and directed by Nicolas Bussard. The work was commissioned for the 100th anniversary of the Lyre de La Roche, directed by Marc-Olivier Broillet, with the premiere taking place in July 2024 in front of an audience of over 2,000.This suite highlights three of the dozen tableaux in the show. After an introduction evoking a sort of journey back in time, the first tableau (bar 20) illustrates various disasters that have occurred in the village over the years. The sky darkens, the thunder rumbles, the rain lashes down, and violent gusts of wind are unleashed on this corner of the country. The storm finally calms down, giving way to great desolation.The second tableau (bar 117) describes the resilience of the villagers, who summon up all their courage to repair the damage. The music is soft, calm, and hopeful.On the strength of this new beginning, the village can embrace modernity: motor vehicles replace horses, a dam is built, and tourism develops, encouraging a society open to other cultures. The third tableau in this suite illustrates all these advances (bar 177). Musically, this final section pays tribute to George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein, two of the 20th century's great musicians and composers, who worked during the fascinating period of modern times and well beyond.

"Gratitude" is one of Grieg's beautiful lyrical pieces, Op. 62 No. 2.Eva Knardahl made a beautiful recording that I well remember was used as background for a picture cavalcade by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation during the passing of His Majesty King Olav V of Norway in 1991.In this arrangement for band, I have tried to vary the instrumentation, both for the sake of more colours and to emphasize the drama.This piece should be played rubato with elastic phrasing. The form can be described as AABACoda. The most dramatic section is the B part from measure 25, which peaks just before measure 38. The last four measures (from measure 53) can be done a bit 'meno' in tempo.Reid Gilje

An exciting arrangement where almost all players have a bit of the melody line. There are many opportunities to give individual musicians soloistic challenges. Any bandmember should find something interesting in this piece. It will be possible to add vocals to the arrangement. A lovely melody with great expressions.Our Last Summer" is a song by the Swedish pop group ABBA from their seventh studio album, "Super Trouper," released in 1980. The song is indeed featured in the musical "Mamma Mia!", a little bit shortened and with small changes in the lyrics. The musical premiered in London's West End in 1999 and is a duet performed by the characters Harry Bright and Donna Sheridan, reflecting on their past romance during a summer spent in Paris.The song is primarily sung by Bjorn Ulvaeus, with backing vocals provided by Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, the female members of ABBA. Their harmonies contribute to the song's nostalgic and wistful atmosphere. The lyrics vividly describe the memories of the summer spent together, including scenes of walking along the Seine River in Paris and listening to French songs. The song also touches on the passage of time and the realization that the summer romance has ended.While not released as an official single in most countries, "Our Last Summer" still received considerable airplay and became a fan favorite.
