Open All Hours - Wellington Guernsey & Joseph Ascher - John Lee

The theme tune from one of Britain’s iconic comedy shows is in fact, an old tune entitled ‘Alice, Where Art Thou’ composed by Joseph Ascher, a Dutch composer and pianist. The opening title sequence of the show heard brass arranger, Max Harris performing his own version of the tune, who also composed the incidental music for the show. This light-hearted release coincides with the release of the new Open All Hours series starring David Jason who now runs the corner shop years later. A great easy going summer concert item and one that audience members will truly enjoy.(also playable by training bands)

Scarlett O'Hara - Jerry Lordan - Len Jenkins

Named after the central character in Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone with the Wind", Scarlett O'Hara was written by Jerry Lordan and first released by former Shadows' bass player Jet Harris and drummer Tony Meehan in 1963. It followed their chart??"topping success "Diamonds" by the same composer earlier that year and an arrangement for brass band for that number is also available from Wobbleco Music. Whilst originally featuring Harris leading on an electric guitar, and Meehan on drums, both of the arrangements for brass seek to capture the characteristic style of 60's rock music and retain the signature drum solos for which they are rightly remembered.

Diamonds - Jerry Lordan - Len Jenkins

In November 1962, ex-Shadows members Jet Harris and Tony Meehan decided to work as a duo and went to No 1 with a Jerry Lordan composition, "Diamonds". Harris, a bass player, took an ordinary Fender guitar and detuned every string a whole tone to enable him to hit notes which were lower than an ordinary guitar. However, it was apparently difficult to work with on stage since once the strings were slackened they would go out of tune very easily. The duo went on to have a second Top 10 hit with "Scarlett O'Hara" which is also available from Wobbleco Music in an arrangement for brass band. Both arrangements seek to capture the characteristic style of 60's rock music and retain the signature drum solos for which they are rightly remembered. But in addition, both pieces also appeal to a younger generation who may not have heard the originals. Our young kit drummer in Woburn Sands 'A' Band commented "...the (drum) part has the slightest shuffle feel to it, which improves the groove of the song, and to replicate the vintage snare-drum sound, I have heard that you can place a towel or a cloth over the head of the drum. I think it would work well...(otherwise) the drum part stays relatively simple and repetitive"...Chance to re-create the sound of the 60's.....Go for it!

    MacArthur Park

MacArthur Park is a pop rock song from the 1970s with a classical edge. It's no surprise that this brass band arrangement of MacArthur Park is available today. This iconic tune fits the brass band perfectly, and this particular arrangement oozes musicality and energy. The legend that surrounds MacArthur Park is that Jim Webb was challenged to write a hit song on the basis the Webb felt all you need is a good music, and that the lyrics don't really matter. The song went on to become a success for Richard Harris, Donna Summer, Glen Campbell, among others. The moral of the story: don't leave your cake out in the rain.

    MacArthur Park

Over a period of four decades Jimmy Webb (b. 1946) has written hits for a number of singers including Glen Campbell, Art Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Linda Ronstadt. His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn't We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris' seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. Philip Sparke has made this excellentarrangement for brass band, which is sure to become a regular feature on your concert programme.
