Salute to the Victor was commissioned by Helen, Alex and James Grieve for the Golden Kangaroos (Hornsby Concert Band) from Sydney, Australia, in memory of their parents, Louise and Victor Grieve, Founder and Director.

Using material from Antonio VivaldiasThe Four Seasons, this programmatic work depicts the following story:The year is 2024, Earth has been invaded by a group of evil organists called aThe Buxtehudariansa, wiping out most of mankind. However, a secret group of highly intelligent dogs have defrosted the composer Antonio Vivaldi who was cryogenically frozen by the Vatican society of music for obedient dogs. Their chief dog leader aBongoa who over years of listening to the music of Vivaldi has gained the ability to fly, is set to undertake a mission to Saturn to obtain the golden Bassoon with which to defeat the tyrannical Buxtehuderians. With Vivaldi firmly mounted on Bongo they take off, entering full dog overdrive and breaking through the many satellites and second-hand saxophones that surround the earths atmosphere. As they fly through space, Vivaldi sadly gets distracted by a drunken trombonist and becomes separated from Bongo. Bongo now summons his musical ability to perform Vivaldias second movement of Spring from the Four Seasons on a glockenspiel stored at the international space station, enticing Antonio back on their mission. They finally arrive at Saturn and swiftly grab the golden Bassoon, returning to Earth with a thump. Their mission is complete! Made famous by the boy band 'Take That', this fantastic new angle on the song from Lucy Pankhurst, creatively features the flugel and tenor horn section with full support from the accompanying band.Take That's Gary Barlow wrote 'A Million Love Songs' when he was 15. He also recorded a rough demo of the track, and was one of the songs he gave to music manager Nigel Martin-Smith on a cassette tape as part of his audition to join a boy-band.In his autobiography A Better Me, Gary revealed that Martin-Smith was so impressed by the tape, that he didn't realise it was Gary singing. As legend has it, the conversation went like this:Martin-Smith: "This tape, who has written the songs?"Barlow: "Me"Martin-Smith: "Who wrote the words, then?"Barlow: "Me. As it's title suggests, this piece consists of three distinct elements, all of which maximise the stylish creativity of Kenneth Downie's renowned writing talent.After a rich, warm and hymnal opening 'movement' based upon Kum Ba Yah, the work develops and lifts into a fascinating take on 'The Lord's Prayer'. Bringing the piece to an even more positive, up-tempo close is the final section which references the South African traditional song We Are Marching (Siyahamb' ekukhanyen' kwenknos')Kenneth Downie composed this work in support of a charitable project, known in 2005 as Brass Band Aid. The organisation called for original compositions to be included in a follow-up CD release - Into Africato help raise funds for projects in Adet, Africa, and to build awareness of theMake Poverty History campaign. Bernie's Song - Miller/Leiber/Stoller ver.Mulligan, arr.John Dankworth - Len Jenkins
Bernie's Tune is a 1953 jazz standard with music written by Bernie Miller and lyrics by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was popularised through a recording by the quartet of the American saxophonist and composer Gerry Mulligan, and the tune was a popular choice for musicians jamming at the time. Information about the composer is scarce. All that people really know of him is that he was a piano player from Washington DC. Gerry Mulligan's version was subsequently arranged by the late, legendary John Dankworth and this arrangement for brass band has been faithfully based on it to evoke the atmosphere of that golden era.
