Pacific Dreams - Jacob de Haan

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting "Pacific Dreams" Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of "Pacific Dreams", he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his "Pacific Dreams".Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Eventus (Lake of Dreams) - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Eventus - Lake of Dreams was composed for Dr. Robert Childs and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band especially for the 2015 Brass In Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead. The music acts as a curtain raiser, introducing the band in sections, initially featuring the percussion and low brass. A virtuoso duet then ensues, quickly followed by a flugel and horn duet leading into each section of the band being individually showcased, before the conductor finally enters the stage.Inspired by the Lacus Somniorum (Lake of Dreams), the music is optimistic in style and follows Paul Lovatt-Cooper's trademark formula, creating a spine-tingling ‘opener' with a difference! The work received its world premiere performance during Grimethorpe's August 2015 tour of Australia and is featured on the CD ‘Grimethorpe Entertain'.

In Dreams - Roy Orbison - Len Jenkins

"In Dreams" is a song composed and sung by rock and roll performer Roy Orbison, and was released as a single on Monument Records in February 1963. Orbison later claimed that the origin for "In Dreams" came to him while he was sleeping, as many of his songs did. When he woke up the next morning, the entire composition was written in 20 minutes. Like many of Orbison's songs, but unlike the majority of rock and roll ballads, in under 3 minutes it goes through seven movements with distinct melodies and chord progressions without repeating itself. It was for that reason that I have always believed it was a suitable piece for brass where one does not have lyrics to distinguish changes between verses to avoid monotony. Graham Cooper

A Place Where Dreams Come True - James McFadyen

A Place Where Dreams Come True is concert item that is like a tiny symphony. Opening with an original chorale which merges into a pop-rock item with lyrical and syncopated melodies. From there, the piece transforms into classical overture style before entering the closing bars which are more akin to a sad song. This is one of James' earliest compositions for brass band and it certainly has a unique form, but somehow the piece as a whole feels recognisable and comfortable. A real hidden gem of a piece this one!

Dreams are to be Without Motion - James McFadyen

This soprano cornet solo does not dwell on dull or poetic musical lines. Instead, Dreams are to be Without Motion gets going with a highly groovy melody, which is both funky and lyrical. This solo will suit soprano players look from a welcome break from the staple slow solos, and give the soloist the opportunity to let loose with foot-tapping motifs. The band parts are not difficult but they are not altogether straight forward either; for this reason, this solo is ideal for bands of 3rd section standard and upwards.

    Dreams - Bertrand Moren

This composition by Bertrand Moren presents various dreams which could have an effect on a dreamer's life. Its very high level of difficulty provides a great challenge for the conductor and musicians. You will be taken through a living Nightmare, with spine-chilling passages as dissonant chords alternate with aggressive percussion. Daydream is a patchwork of solos with all the brass band soloists playing serene and soft melodic lines with a virtuosic trombone cadenza. Finally, Visions portrays visions of insanity reflected by violent and discordant descending motifs leading to visions of joy presented in a sparkling and cheerful finale.

    Speedy Dreams - Jerker Johansson

Speedy Dreams was premiered by Goteborg Wind Orchestra in 2013 with Fredrik Duvling as snare drum soloist. The composer Jerker Johansson is a percussionist himself, so through the years he has spent lots of time practising the snare drum. Theinspiration to the composition came to him in a dream, which was about yet another dream:On the evening of Christmas Eve a small child is trying to go to sleep. It is not so easy. Earlier in the day the child has got a small drum as aChristmas present. So instead of sleeping the child is fantasising about the new toy drum and how exciting it will be to learn how to play it.

DREAMS AND DANCES (Flugel Horn Solo with Brass Band) - Harper, Philip

Dreams and Dances is a substantial seven minute solo for one of the most characteristic of the brass band's instruments. It begins slowly and dreamily, with a flugel line encompassing both lyrical and florid styles, before moving via a short cadenza to a set of dances in a quick 6/8 time. The solo part would be a challenge for any player, but the accompaniment parts should he manageable by all.
