ABOUT THIS PIECE: Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence by Edward Bairstow is a setting of the ancient hymn text from the Liturgy of St. James, and embodies a profound sense of reverence and awe. Bairstow, a renowned composer and organist, served as Master of Music at the iconic York Minster, one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in the world. His tenure at York Minster significantly influenced his compositions, many of which are celebrated for their spiritual depth and grandeur, and that use the incredible acoustic of the cathedral as part of their very structure. This arrangement translates Bairstow's choral masterpiece into a stirring brass setting, maintaining the richness and gravitas that makes it so memorable. This music was written for Salvation Brass. It is declamatory in style and would fit the role of an intrada. The words associated are by a former General of The Salvation Army, Albert Orsborn, and have a very optimistic tone, consistent with the Christian faith. The chorus reads: Jesus shall conquer, lift up the strain! Evil shall perish and righteousness shall reign.The tune used is Pilgrims (T.B. 548), by Henry Thomas Smart, the 19th Century English composer and organist, who also wrote another of my favourite hymn tunes, Regent Square. Keeping a steady tempo will help to preserve the dignity of the theme and also help to avoid the busier passages in the score from being rushed. As ever, articulation and dynamics require careful attention.

The Salvation Army Song Book of 1986 lists two further hymns that can be sung to the tune; 'I stand all bewildered with wonder and gaze on the ocean of love' ( W F Crafts) and 'When Jesus from Calvary called me, unfolding its meaning to me' (Will J Brand). This arrangement was made for Martyn Bryant, the long-serving principal cornetist of Bristol Easton Band of The Salvation Army.

This sublime arrangement of the much loved hymn tune Rockingham ('When I survey the wondrous cross'), was arranged by Karl Whelan in memory of Frank Naylor. Frank was a faithful member of North Ashton Band based in Wigan (UK), a renowned tenor horn player and an inspiration to his many pupils over the years. In reference to Frank's slow melody piece of choice, there is also a reference in the trombones to Star of Bethlehem by Stephen Adams, leading into the final verse.
