    Fire in the Blood - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Fire in the Blood was commissioned by Dr Stephen Cobb for the 120th anniversary of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army. The piece was composed for the celebration concert where the ISB were joined by several other staff bands from around the world to perform independently to a sell-out capacity crowd at Britain’s most famous concert hall The Royal Albert Hall. Fire in the Blood received its world premier at the ‘ISB 120’ concert at the Royal Albert Hall on June 4th 2011.With this piece I wanted to acknowledge music that had an impact on me through my Salvation Army upbringing. When thinking of a title for this piece I had no hesitation than to reflect and re-word the Salvation Army’s motto under their famous crest ‘Blood and Fire’.When composing Fire in the Blood I wanted to use three songs of worship that have been prevalent in the Salvation Army’s services over a number of years. Opening with Richard Phillips’ setting of Psalm 95, ‘Sing for Joy’, the music is vibrant and full of energy, I wanted to capture the spirit of the well known words of Scripture. The music then moves into a more reflective section that includes Howard Davies’ emotive song melody ‘Lord, you know that we love you’ and Laurie Klein’s worship song ‘I love you Lord’.A re-statement of the opening Psalm setting follows and this, in turn, leads into a dramatic and powerful finale that combines two pivotal statements drawn from the slower, reflective section: I love you lord, and I lift my voice to worship you, O my soul rejoice and Lord, you know that we love you with a final flourish from Psalm 95: Come let us sing joy to the Lord!Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Island Whirl - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Island Whirl was commissioned by Margaret Milligan who wanted a brand new piece of music composed as a present for Ian, her husband for his 70th birthday. Ian Milligan is a keen and dedicated musician and he is the musical director of Callendar Brass, based in Callendar near Stirling in Scotland.Margaret contacted me about the possibility of composing a short lively piece which had a Scottish theme that would be ideal for Callendar Brass Band and any other ensemble to get their teeth into. This piece takes its inspiration from the traditional Scottish folk song ‘An Eriskay Love Lilt’ which is a particular favourite of both Margaret and Ian.With thunderous Celtic drums the piece opens in a whirlwind of sound with fanfare brass and an off-stage soloist that can perform using either the cornet or trumpet. After the exciting opening, the brass and drums die away to allow the off-stage soloist to air the traditional tune ‘An Eriskay Love Lilt’.The beautiful haunting melody, keeping its originality throughout undergoes a series of changes in the accompanying harmonic material before dying away to allow the Celtic drums to return. The percussion whip the band into a frenzy as the piece gets faster and faster. Just prior to the final notes the band diminuendo to allow one last closing statement from the Eriskay Love Lilt lead by the off-stage soloist before the ensemble charge to a dramatic close.When performing this piece I would recommend the off-stage soloist taking a position somewhere in the audience, so they can almost feel part of the performance. In addition, with the two tom-tom parts that represent the Celtic drums, bands should make the most of showcasing them by getting the two drummers out to the front of the band to perform. The ideal stage position would be with the players set up in stereo with one player in front of the soprano cornet and the other in front of the solo trombone.With the various choreographed movements from both the off-stage soloist and the percussionists. This piece is a great addition to any concert repertoire and is an ideal showcase for bands who want to try something a little different.I wish Ian at 70 years young, all the very best with his music making in the many years to come and I hope this piece, composed especially for him and Callender Brass brings them many years of musical enjoyment.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

A note from the composer: I love the magic of Christmas. I find the whole experience exciting, from the handing out of presents to the movies shown on television. However, it is the music I love the most, from Christmas carols to Christmas number ones, it all adds to the unique atmosphere and sense of joviality associated with this wonderful time of year. A Christmas Finale captures my yuletide emotions and will hopefully provide enjoyment for you too!     One Day was commissioned by Celia Barnes in the memory of her late partner Dave Dumolo. When Dave died suddenly aged 57 Celia wanted a living memory of Dave who was a big brass band fan. Celia wanted a concert piece that featured the flugelhorn and contacted Paul Lovatt-Cooper about composing the piece for her.Paul says "The flugelhorn is a great instrument for performing in both a classical and jazz style. It is the latter that I decided to compose this piece in the style of. I am very much a fan of the music of Pat Methany who is famous for his easy listening jazz styles. One Day follows in the footsteps of Pat Methany's music."

    Christians Awake - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Christmas time is my favourite time of year. I love the festive spirit and all the Christmas music both traditional and modern.I came across the carol "Christians Awake" a number of years ago when I played in a carol concert with the Black Dyke Band and the Halifax Choral Society. I think it is a fabulous carol and it is now one of my favourite Christmas carols.Two good friends of mine; Angela and Christopher Clough were married during the Christmas period in 2007. They both play with the band Wardle Anderson Brass who played at their wedding. They asked me if I could compose a piece for the band to play while Angela walked down the aisle. So for their wedding present I composed a fanfare using the carol Christians Awake.They were thrilled with the piece as was I. It works really well as a concert opener or an opener to the second half of a Christmas concert. It should be played with lots of bravura and pomp and full of the spirit of Christmas.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Jack in a Box - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    From the many musicians I have had the privilege to compose for this piece has probably been the most enjoyable.The reason being was because I was approached by members of the Bilton Silver (Rugby) Band to compose a xylophone solo for one of their young percussionists Jack Fisher. Jack is no stranger to me as I have had the privilege to teach him whilst he has been a student with the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain. He certainly is a player to watch out for in the future and not only is he talented; he is also a great character as well.When the members of Bilton Silver Band conversed with me about the proposed commission, they said they wanted a solo that represented Jack’s cheeky and fun loving nature. They also wanted a solo that wasn’t too demanding for the young starlet and so it gave the opportunity for other up and coming percussionists to play as well.The piece is quick and fun and it provides a solo for percussionists who are developing as players to work on. It is enjoyable to listen to and it’s proving to be a bit of a foot-tapper as well with audiences.When I was a child I had an old Jack-in-a-box toy that played the nursery rhyme pop goes the weasel before Jack popped out and scared the life out of me. So for a bit of fun I have quoted pop goes the weasel in the solo which aptly lead me to the suitable title for the piece Jack in a Box.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Carly Simon first took this song into the charts in 1977, following the release of Ian Fleming's 10th James Bond blockbuster, The Spy Who Loved Me.Back then, Sir Roger Moore played '007', with a characterisation that was full of debonair charm and sparkling wit. Having played 'Bond' from 1972 to 1985, and appearing in six movies, he was, for many, the definitive James Bond. But sadly, on 23rdMay 2017, he passed away.Commissioned for the Flowers Band to premiere at Brass in Concert 2017, Paul Lovatt-Cooper pays tribute to Sir Roger Moore through this new setting, combining hauntingly reflective sounds with the type of exhilarating, powerhouse riffs, synonymous with a James Bond soundtrack.     The idea behind the title is that as humans we remember great people living and past who have touched our lives and have made a big impact on how we lead our lives; people like our loved ones, family members, friends, religious leaders and celebrities. They have either taught us, helped us to understand or lead their lives by example and, in our eyes, are heroes. We look up to these people and remember them as heroes. Their spirit and influence stays with us wherever we are. Thus, we are 'Walking with Heroes'.This piece was commissioned by Donald Hanson in memory of his father, William. It was first performed by Black Dyke Band on Saturday 18th May 2007 in Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Walking With Heroes is the title track of Paul Lovatt-Cooper's debut CD, recorded by the Black Dyke Band.

    Black and White Rag - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    I have taken this tune and arranged it as a xylophone solo with brass band accompaniment.When performing the piece it is relatively straight forward. However, the soloist needs to be aware that the split part at rehearsal figure B in the first four bars is a melody and accompanying figure.The ‘stride like’ quavers that start on notes C and G are to be played with the left stick, while the syncopated solo melody line is to be played with the right stick. At the fifth bar of figure B the soloist can play the semiquavers as they see fit and then return to their ‘stride’ style at bar 46 and so on when it appears.This is a great Rag and it works really well as a solo showcase for xylophone.Paul Lovatt-Cooper
