Seaside Rendezvous - Freddie Mercury - Iain McKnight

There was no greater showman in the world of rock than Freddie Mercury and, for many, no greater group than Queen. The release in 2018 of the film Bohemian Rhapsody brought the sounds of Queen to a new generation as well as providing a welcome dose of musical reminiscence for fans across the world. As well as an astonishingly gifted performer, Freddie Mercury was an equally adept composer, drawing upon his early musical training as a classical pianist as well as his eclectic musical tastes to create songs of immense character and imagination. With its echoes of music hall, vaudeville and no small amount of saucy postcard humour, Seaside Rendezvous is from the band's fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera, released in 1975. The song is so complex and makes such extensive use of multi-tracking and specially recorded effects - the tap dance segment, for example, was created by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor ‘performing' on the mixing desk with thimbles on their fingers - that Queen never performed it live.Colourfully scored and featuring numerous momentary solos around the band - including a feature for the cornet section on kazoos - this arrangement was made for Foden's Band and featured as part of their programme for the 2018 Brass in Concert Championships at Sage Gateshead. The band subsequently recorded it on their 2019 CD, Trials and Triumphs.

Innuendo - Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon - Peter Meechan

Winner of ‘Best new Composition or Arrangement’ at Brass In Concert some years ago, this stunning arrangement is now finally available to all bands. The work was performed as part of Whitburn band’s Brass in Concert programme and saw the arranger, Dr Peter Meechan take the Cyril Beere Memorial Trophy for this clever take on the Queen classic rock hit. The arrangement has been in great demand but has not been published, until now. Featuring antiphonal trumpets, hand claps and host of other clever effects, this is the perfect choice for bands looking for something different at concerts and entertainments contests.

Fire in the Sky - Peter Meechan

Fire in the Sky takes its inspiration from the stunning town of Montreux in Switzerland. I was commissioned to write the work 5 days before I visited this Montreux and was at work forming ideas for the piece as I arrived on the shore of Lake Geneva and its amazing views of the Alps.Whilst the scenery is without doubt some of the most incredible views I have ever witnessed, it was the history of the town that set Fire in the Sky in motion. Whilst there, it occurred to me that many of my musical heroes had lived or performed there, and three of them in particular had a strong connection with the town. Miles Davis, Igor Stravinsky and Freddie Mercury graced Montreux - the large convention centre, where the famous summer jazz festival is held, named its two halls after Davis and Stravinsky, and there is a quite breathtaking statue of Mercury in the town too. Each musician also commemorates an anniversary in 2011, the year of the premiere of Fire in the Sky; it is 40 years since the death of Stravinsky and both Miles Davis and Freddie Mercury died in 1991, making it 20 years since their deaths. So it seemed fitting to write a piece that in some way acknowledges them, and is a kind of personal a??thanksa? for all they have given, and continue to give, me.The title comes from the famous Deep Purple song, Smoke on the Water - whose second line is a??Fire in the Skya? and is a reference to the night the towna??s casino was set alight by a Frank Zappa fan. The piece tries to recreate the atmosphere of that night, paint a picture of fire in the sky (and smoke on the water) and also uses small a??nuggetsa? of the music of my three greatest musical heroes, Miles Davis, Freddie Mercury and Igor Stravinsky.Fire in the Sky was commissioned by the Tomra Brass Band, Norway, and is dedicated to Stijn BerbeA? and Nick Ost - both of whom are connected with the band (teaching and conducting), and both have been close friends - personally and musicaly - for many years. I am indebted to them for the opportunity to write this piece.

    Barcelona

In 1987, Montserrat Caball? met with Freddie Mercury to discuss the production of a new song for the forthcoming 1992 Olympics to be held in Barcelona. From this meeting both agreed to produce an album titled: "Barcelona" - the title track of the same name which would be the iconic track used as the theme for the 1992 Olympics. The song had it's first performance in May 1987 at the Ibiza Festival and then again in 1988 at the open air La Nit festival in Barcelona. This would be Freddie Mercury's last live performance. In 1991 Mercury died - one year before the Olympics. The track was broadcast at the start of the international broadcast of the 1992 Olympics ceremony. In 1999 at the UEFA Champions League Final held in Barcelona, Montserrat Caball? performed 'Barcelona' live together with a recording of Freddie Mercury and his image which appeared on the stadium's electronic screen.
