£35.55Disinformation! (Brass Band) Joe Galuszka
This atmospheric work by English composer Joe Galuszka is set in three movements: I. Fear II. Hope III. Solidarity (March for Truth) The composer writes: 'All around us is mistrust in the information we receive. Chinese misinformation. Russian disinformation. 'Fake News' in the United States. At every turn we doubt what we hear, what we see. Disinformation was composed in response to the ever-growing and all powerful misinformation campaigns worldwide that reached dizzying levels of influence, coming from some of the most eminent heads of states, during the turn of the 21st century. With division and disillusionment now rife and engrained in Western democracies, the unravelling of the social order is reflected in this short work for brass band. Opening with Fear, Disinformation starts with vast amounts of noise taking over the establishment and paints a world with people coming to terms with the cacophony of sound that is 'false information'. With a retreat to a brief moment of solace, Hope conjures up a calm escapism where on the outside, the brave and the wise look on to what is becoming of our new world. Maybe there is chance to pull together? Ending with a frenzied, brazen climax, the piece concludes with Solidarity - where people and the politicians come to loggerheads in a battle - where those who seek division are called out and the lies are laid bare for all to see, as we enter, once more, the unknown.' £55.30A Renaissance Christmas (Brass Band) Kevin Norbury
VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent festive suite was written by Kevin Norbury for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Wind Symphony and features several well known carols set in a Renaissance style. Here it has been set for brass band. Three contrasting movements comprise the work: i. Processional (Personent hodie - On this day earth shall ring) This is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material. ii. Pastorale (Quem pastores laudavere - Shepherds sang their praises o'er him) This is a 14th-century melody which was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. iii. Celebration! (In dulci jubilo - In sweet celebration - Ding-dong merrily on high)) This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditional associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S.Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In dulci jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. £62.99Caprice (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. This arrangement was made possible through Matt's instigation and generosity. £86.75'Odyssey' Variations (Brass Band) Kevin Norbury
'Odyssey' Variations was composed as a result of a commission in May 2020 from Five Lakes Silver Band and its musical director, Christopher Ward. This music is based on an original theme that I first used in an earlier composition, Odyssey, which was the test piece for the European Brass Band Championships, held at Munich, Germany, in April 1999. I distinctly remember getting into my hotel room and turning on the television to be greeted by news coverage of the Columbine High School shooting, so that piece has always held some significance for me, though because of a very sad coincidence. The melody was originally a cornet solo in the central slow section of Odyssey and pitched deliberately to test the soloist. I have, more recently attempted a straightforward choral setting of the melody, and the harmonies I use in the three chorale-style settings at the start of these variations are loosely based on that setting. The melody is a setting of the familiar words of Be Thou My Vision, an old Irish hymn, translated by Mary E. Byrne, and versified by Eleanor H. Hull. £70.97Letters from Flanders (Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
This descriptive work by Australian composer Andrew Batterham portrays the experiences of his maternal grandfather, Corporal Reginald Littlejohns, (4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion) in the First World War. Reginald left Melbourne for Europe in May 1916 then served in Flanders through to the end of the war. He returned in April 1919, having sent hundreds of letters home during his service. His honest, articulate, and highly descriptive prose served as inspiration for this piece. Each of the 5 movements portrays a different aspect of Reginald's war, with a quote from his letters included. The first movement was premiered by the Box Hill City Band, conducted by Matt van Emmerik, in Melbourne. Daniel van Bergen conducted Booroondara Brass performing most of the work in April 2019, and Box Hill premiered the complete version in November 2019 conducted by Simon Brown.
