Instrumentation:2 Trumpets in CHorn in FTromboneTubaWritten in memory of Philip Jones, this short work was first performed at his memorial concert held at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2000. Scored for Brass Quintet, it was performed by former members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.My friendship with Philip Jones stretched back to my student days, when my Quintet for Brass was performed during my final year at the Royal Academy of Music. Philip was present at that premiere in 1967, and soon after that his ensemble performed and broadcast the Quintet on a UK Tour, including a performance in the finals of the BBC Young Composer's Competition. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude for promoting a work by a then unknown young composer.I use a brief quote from the opening of my 1967 Brass Quintet in this work, which is generally rather sombre in character, except for the sudden change of mood and tempo in the short final section, when the clouds suddenly lift and the sun shines through.- Edward GregsonDuration: 5.00

VIEW SCORE PDF This uplifting and rhythmic fanfare by American composer J. Aaron Stanley will be an ideal alternative to the traditional fare that is written in celebration of the Olympic Games. The composer writes: 'Most of my works start with a concept and working title in mind before I even begin composing. But Fanfare for the Olympians, on the other hand, was titled afterward, allowing the music to suggest its own title. The festive, anticipatory nature of the work seems to build excitement and tension for something celebratory and grandiose, like the Olympic Games. Written in 2000, at the time, I was obsessed with quartal harmonies and asymmetrical meters. But the driving eighth-note pulse of alternating 2+2+3 / 3+2+2 is what drives the fanfare forward to its epic climax.' I was glad was originally a choral introit which is a popular piece in the musical repertoire of the Anglican church. It is traditionally sung in the Church of England as an anthem at the coronation of the British monarch, most recently that of King Charles III in May 2023. This transcription for brass band combines the choral and accompaniment parts meaning it is playable as a standalone arrangement. An optional organ part is included to augment the brass. The cornet section is divided into two choirs to create an antiphonal effect. The 'Vivats' are included in this transcription but an optional cut is provided for that section.
