£60.76Horizon: The Promise of the Lord (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
Horizon: The Promise of the Lord was written at the request of Bandmaster Stephen Cobb for The International Staff Band. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church, Cwm Rhondda (Guide me O thou great Jehovah). The work was recorded on the ISB's CD Manuscripts II (released 2023). This highly descriptive piece will be an excellent addition to concert programs, as well as being appropriate as a test piece. The inspiration for the work comes from the book of Exodus. Whilst the music is not intended to be directly programmatic, like the hymn Cwm Rhondda, the work takes the listener through the Exodus from Egypt to the promised land of Israel as a metaphor of the spiritual pilgrimage of the individual Christian through his or her earthly life. The music aims to evoke a sense of God's guidance through strife and affirm the reality that God provides for us and redeems all the wrong in the world. This God who provided for the Hebrew people wandering amidst 'barren lands' with 'bread of heaven' is still and ever will be a God of provisional grace. Through listening to the music, it is the composer's intention that we are reminded of God's promise of Deliverance as set out in Exodus 6 v7-8: 'I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.' Like the hymn, Horizon: The Promise of the Lord is intended as a prayer for guidance. The Christian is a pilgrim through 'this barren land'. The music is often chromatic and in large parts verging on atonality, as a reflection of the strife that the Israelites endured in their 40 years in the wilderness. However, it ends in climactic fashion with the Hebrew people finally reaching their destination after many years of wandering in the desert - as they approach the 'Horizon' promised by the Lord. This rousing fanfare prelude for Brass Band and optional Organ by Kenneth Downie is based on the monumental hymn Now thank we all our God, which dates from 17th century Germany. The arrangement is featured on the CD Classic Hymns for Orchestra - The Symphonic Music of Kenneth Downie (available here) as a symphonic brass setting. The arranger writes: 'The depth of the words is underpinned by the grandeur of the music, so I have tried to reflect the same regal approach in my setting for brass band.' £34.18March - Helping Hands (Rob Bushnell) Brass Band
Helping Hands was written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). The piece is loosely programmatic in nature: The introductio is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands' anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. The second section (bars 35 to 52) sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section (bars 53 to 69) represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day. The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. The piece is influenced by marches that are commonly heard during the Whit Friday March Contests, using motifs, rhythms and harmonic progressions (sparingly) throughout the piece. This tour de force will be ideal for bands looking for a barnstorming finale to their concert. The 'Italian' was really Mendelssohn's 3rd Symphony at the time it was completed in 1833. The 'Italian' is certainly a youthful work, not in its technique, since it shows a perfect mastery of symphonic composition, but in its spirit. He had begun it two years earlier on a visit to Italy, where the vivid sights and sounds had impressed him immensely, just as the visit to Scotland had the year before. The atmosphere of Italy impelled him to translate his impressions into another symphony. The dazzling finale, the Saltarello, conjures up a picture of Italian peasants dancing frantically in a wild and whirling fashion, not unlike the tarantella. The arranger writes: 'It was noted by some players of the day that the orchestral parts were somewhat virtuosic for the time, and this virtuosic style inspired me to arrange this for brass band.' £34.18The Piano Preludes (Brass Band) George Gershwin arr. Rob Bushnell
First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, The Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote seven, performed only six publically and was further reduced to three when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baiao and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was "a sort of blues lullaby" consists of two sections: the first a "lazy" melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called "Spanish" by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. Apex - Peter Meechan
Apex was commissioned by Mark Bousie and David Armitage (President of Sellers International Ltd.) for the Sellers International Youth Band to perform at the Action Research Entertainment Contest in Blackpool, 2007. In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by Natalya Sats and the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a musical symphony for children. Drawing from various sources, he created Peter and the Wolf, a work designed to introduce young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra. Prokofiev conducted both the Moscow premiere in May 1936 and the first English-language performance in Boston in 1938. In this adaptation for brass band, Duncan Wilson has abridged the original 25-minute score into a concert-friendly 18-minute version. All core material and principal themes remain intact. While the full band represents the character of Peter, the arrangement suggests seating the four other main characters (Bird, Duck, Cat, and Grandfather) slightly apart from the main ensemble. To enhance the performance, players may choose to develop their characters using costumes and accessories. Few melodies possess the haunting beauty and instant recognizability of The Lonely Shepherd. Originally composed by legendary bandleader James Last for a solo project titled Filmmusik Ohne Filme (Film Music Without Films), the track eventually found its home on the 1977 album Memories of Russia. It was this recording that catapulted pan flutist Gheorghe Zamfir to international superstardom, reaching the Top 25 on the German charts and becoming a permanent fixture in the global musical lexicon. While the original album title suggested "films without movies," the track didn't stay "homeless" for long. Its evocative, melancholic atmosphere has made it a favorite for directors across decades and continents. This brass band arrangement preserves the ethereal quality of the original, the soaring melodic lines and rhythmic intensity of the finale offering a brilliant showcase of phrasing and emotional depth. At The Going Down Of The Sun is a deeply moving musical tribute dedicated to the courage, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice of those who have defended the nation of Australia. Inspired by the heroic legacy of the 2/25th Battalion and their storied defense of the Kokoda Track during World War II, this composition serves as a solemn reminder of the immense gratitude owed to its fallen heroes. This piece is born from a legacy of service. It was composed in honor of Keith Fitzpatrick, who enlisted in the AIF on November 28, 1941. Keith served two tours in New Guinea, spending 359 days on the treacherous Kokoda Track. Keith Fitzpatrick lived to celebrate his 100th birthday in 2023, leaving behind a profound legacy through his wife of 67 years, Valda, and three generations of descendants.
