    Euphonium Music (Score only) - Brian Bowen

    Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument.     Abide with me for euphonium and brass band, arr. Paul McGhee

    Paul McGhee made this haunting arrangement of W.H. Monk's famous hymn tune for the young Belgianstar of the euphonium Glenn Van Looy, who performed it on 27 January 2013 at the Royal NorthernCollege of Music Festival of Brass, with the Leyland Band conducted by Michael Bach. Surrounding thethree verses of the solo line are wisps of texture, irregular rhythms and colours form brass andpercussion, giving the music an unsettled feel. Abide with me is a favourite of Paul McGhee, who says“When watching the film 28 Days Later I thought it would make a rather striking arrangement for brassband. This was confirmed further when the hymn was used at the 2012 opening ceremony of the LondonOlympics.     Canzona Bravura - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    I always enjoy writing solos, because it is a new opportunity to compose a piece of music for an instrument to demonstrate its full musical capability. In ‘Canzona Bravura’ I was asked to compose something new and fresh for the euphonium that portrayed its technical ability and also the sonorous sound this fabulous instrument has to offer.The piece is in ternary form with sections A/B/A (fast/slow/fast). I wanted to write music that sounded fun to play and also music that the audience would enjoy listening to. I also wanted to give the music a more modern feel and so the relentless quaver pulse from the ensemble provides a continuous heartbeat for the soloist to sit on and show off its technical capability.The euphonium shows off its technical ability through the slurred quavers and running semiquavers. However, the lyrical playing which is prevalent throughout the slow B section gets an introduction during the fast A section at bar 38. It gives the listener a taste of the slow melody that is to come and also an opportunity to join the euphonium with its unfashionable cousin the baritone as they play a duet together.‘Canzona Bravura’ definitely offers plenty for the soloist to get their teeth into and also allows them the opportunity to enjoy their lyrical playing to the full. There is a lot of musical material which is passed between soloist and accompanying ensemble which forges a strong musical link within the music. It provides an excellent opportunity for the music to connect with soloist, ensemble and audience.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Diamond Concerto - Philip Sparke

    Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.The village of Morschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and concert band (AMP 354-010).

    Eire Time - Andrea Price

    Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 3 (Soloist 5) A virtuosic euphonium solo with a celtic flavour by Andrea Price. Composed in 2014 for Black Dyke principle euphonium Gary Curtin, Eire Time weaves together three traditional Irish folk tunes in a lively and virtuosic celebration of all things Irish. The piece opens with Star of Munster, a playful but tricky reel with a real foot-tapping lilt to the accompanying parts. The middle movement, The Leaving of Liverpool, is a lyrical slow melody that tells of travel and homesickness and here the band sensitively supports the soloists soaring countermelody. A percussion interlude leads us into the finale, a fast romp through the fiendishly difficult Drowsy Maggie, a real classic of the genre. Duration: 00:05:00

    Brass Triumphant - Gareth Wood

    Brass Triumphant is a four-movement work and was composed for the Cory Band during their 125th anniversary year of 2009.The first movement is a celebratory fanfare featuring a strong melody as the thread which runs throughout the whole work. The second movement is powerful in nature and reflects struggle and endeavour. The third movement is a beautiful slow melodic poem subtitled Mist of the Forest. A melody carried by the euphonium honours the great Welsh folk melodies we all know and love. The lollipop finale is a rollercoaster ride, taking us to the very edge of band technique. The hymn tune O Iesu Mawr appears though heavily disguised and is a reminder of the composer's Welsh Heritage.The Cory Band under Dr. Robert Childs gave the World premiere of this work during the World Music Contest Gala Concert in Kerkrade, Netherlands July 2009. It later received its British premiere during September of the same year in Birmingham's Symphony Hall, again performed by the Cory Band under the direction of Robert Childs.

    Dances and Arias - Edward Gregson

    This work was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes Band Festivals (with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain) for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7th October 1984.Dances and Arias is in one continuous movement, but as the title suggests is a series of alternating fast and slow sections as follows: Dance – Aria I – Dance (scherzo) – Aria II – Dance. The opening dance is energetic and introduces a four-note motif (on trombones) which is the basis for much of the melodic material in the work. Throughout, there is a continuous process of thematic cross-reference and transformation.The first aria unfolds a long melody on solo cornet, eventually continued by all the solo cornets, and dissolving into a shimmering harmonic background (muted cornets, horns and baritones) over which is heard a brief self-quotation on solo tuba. This leads into the second dance, a frenetic scherzo, followed by the second aria, in the style of a lament (solo euphonium, followed by two flugel horns). This builds to a powerful climax which subsides, leaving the percussion to introduce the final toccata-like dance. It transforms material from the opening before a coda brings the music to a triumphant close. The large percussion section is an integral part in the work and uses a wide variety of instruments including timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, tubular bells, tom-toms, snare drum, bongos and tam-tam.
