VIEW SCORE PDF Nocturne for Brass Band & Percussion: The Lady with the Lamp was composed for the BrookWright International Brass Band Composer Competition 2020, the work later going on to be a finalist in the competition. The music celebrates the life and achievements of Florence Nightingale on the 200th anniversary of her birth. The work is structured in ternary form and is designed to be an engaging concert piece, accessible to both lower and upper section bands. Minimal percussion has been used and ossia passages have been added to accommodate all levels. The music imagines Miss Nightingale walking the wards at night with the contrasting sections representing her devotion to the care of others, the struggles and sacrifice of her service, and the lasting effect of her renowned achievements that are still felt to this day. Written at the request of Bandmaster Christopher Ward and the Eastern Michigan Divisional Band of The Salvation Army (USA), it was premiered at the 2019 Autumn Praise Festival in Rochester, Michigan which featured the Eastern Michigan Divisional Band and Choir, and the Chicago Staff Band. The piece is based on the popular modern hymn by Keith and Kristin Getty and Stuart Townend, Come People of the Risen King. VIEW SCORE PDF The arranger, Kenneth Downie writes: 'This music was commissioned by Mike Griffiths, Music Director of Riviera Concert Brass, based in Torquay in Devon, England. It is developed around the hymn tune Margaret, and written in memory of the lady of that name who was a renowned supporter of, and generous donor to the band. The graceful melody was written by Timothy Matthews (1826-1910), and it is usually associated with the words of the hymn, the first verse of which says: Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown When thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem's home was there found no room For thy holy nativity, O come to my heart, Lord Jesus; There is room in my heart for thee. I feel that there is a strong emotional core to this lovely tune and any performance should seek to bring out this quality, in a musical manner.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' was written by all members of the band Coldplay for their second studio album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin said: "The song came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce". The chart was originally released in 2003 to critical acclaim. In 2007 Mark Ronson covered the song on his album 'Version' - it is this version this arrangement is based upon. The following arrangement was devised as a concert opener - written as such to allow different sections of the band to make their way to the stage one at a time. The suggested stage entry directions for this arrangement are: Percussion > Basses > Trombones > Horns & Baritones > Cornets & Euphonium. 2016 marked one hundred years since the birth of iconic children's author, Roald Dahl. Storyteller, inspired by the imagination of Roald Dahl, is an ideal opener, with fizzing rhythmic motifs, forward-momentum, and a feeling of excitement through to the close. As with Dahl's magical imagination, ideas are presented boldly and developed throughout the work, with solo contributions from euphonium and baritone, and optional standing moments for soloists and sections. The work was commissioned by and written for Brighouse & Rastrick Band as the opening item to its podium-placed 2016 Brass in Concert programme, premiered at The Sage, Gateshead, on 20th November 2016.
