Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brass section remind of Wagner's music.Duration: 11.30

The English musician Phil Collins has written six new songs for the animated Walt Disney film Brother Bear. His catchy pop rock is well known and popular with a worldwide audience. In Brother Bear, the young Kenai kills a grizzly bear to avenge his brother's death. Then he is magically transformed into a bear himself and he makes friends with the bear cub Koda. Together, they undertake a long, exciting journey in search of the mountain where Kenai can become human again. Meanwhile Kenai's remaining brother hunts them in order to avenge his family. Thus, the main themes of Brother Bear are brotherhood and friendship. On My Way gives voice to the courage and the determination that characterise Brother Bear. Peter Kleine Schaars has produced an excellent arrangement for band, which reflects the original film music very well. 03:45

Concert Overture for Brass BandIn the year 1340 in the town of Ghent, a son was born to Edward III King of England and his Queen Phillipa. The boy, afterwards known as John O'Gaunt (Ghent) grew up to be a warrior and before he was 20 he was fighting in France beside his brother, the Black Prince. For many years he was occupied with the wars in France and Spain and was seldom in England. His first two marriages brought him great riches and position, but the love of his life was Catherine Swynford, who bore him four children. Whilst he was away , his Palace of Savoy was burnt to the ground by the mob during the Peasant's Revolt. Finally in 1394 he returned home and married Catherine, for whom he felt a strong affection since her first marriage in St. Clement Danes Church in the Strand, many years before. In 1956 Sir Kenneth MacMillan created a one-act ballet for the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, London. He selected the music from the two sets of English Dances which Sir Malcolm Arnold had written in 1950 and 1951 to great acclaim. The composer wrote two new dances, a Sarabande and a Polka, especially for the ballet, which was premiered at Sadler's Wells Theatre in June 1956. The two new dances have taken on a life of their own in the concert hall and are typical Arnold: the Sarabande contains one of his most memorable melodies and the Polka shows him at his quirky, tongue-in-cheek best. The English custom of 'Wassailing' is the seasonal act of singing carols door-to-door and wishing good health. The singers and dancers (often very poor) would do this in the hope of being offered a drink from the 'wassail bowl' - a warm broth of hot ale, fruit and spices; good sustenance for those who were cold and often homeless. This popular Christmas carol tells the story of a Bohemian King who braved harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant. This takes place on the Feast of Stephen, the first day of Christmas (December 26th). This legend is based on the life of the historical Saint Wenceslas 1, Duke of Bohemia (907 - 935). In 1853 the English hymn writer John Mason Neale wrote his own version of this tale, setting his words to the melody of a 13th century spring carol "Tempus adest floridum" which had first been published in Piae Cantiones (1582). It is this version that has endured to become the popular carol of today. Duration: 4.30
