£30.06March - His Royal Banner (Brass Band) Jonathan Mead
This upbeat, foot-tapping march by Welsh composer Jonathan Mead features the two well known Welsh tunes of Aberystwyth and God Bless The Prince of Wales. Aberystwyth is set as a big bold bass solo and careful attention will need to be paid to make sure that it sounds clean and together. God Bless The Prince of Wales first appears as a traditional hymn tune, before returning in a more vibrant, lively style, with florid scalic passages for the solo cornets and euphoniums. The march was written with St David's Day in mind, although will be an appropriate addition to concert programme throughout the year as either an opener or finisher. Swinging all the way is a jazzy take on the most well known of Christmas tunes, Jingle Bells. We begin in a dark underground jazz club with the rich, luscious harmonies supporting the tune that we all know. But the melody is perhaps secondary to the timbres and dissonances of this darkly elegant ballad punctuated by the solo cornet, a contrast of styles between the joyous melody and sober accompaniment. As the work progresses it becomes more uplifting, with solo features from the trombone, before emerging into the bright lights of a big band set, with stride bass, crunchy punctuating rhythms and screaming trumpets. The arrangement ends where we began, after our exciting sleigh ride comes to an end. £60.13Caprice (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. Inspired by the infamous investigation into Jack the Ripper, Abberline follows Detective Inspector Frederick Abberline through the mist-shrouded streets of Victorian London in his desperate pursuit of a killer who remains forever just out of reach. Scored for brass band and solo euphonium, the piece blends atmospheric textures, shifting musical identities, and virtuosic demands to capture a narrative that is as haunting as it is unresolved. The piece opens in a world of shadows - the foggy alleys of Whitechapel - where tension simmers beneath the surface. The euphonium enters cautiously, as if stalking unseen figures, echoing the danger and uncertainty that cloaked the city in fear. This eerie calm is broken suddenly: the Ripper strikes. The moment is brief but brutal, leaving only silence and horror in its wake. From here, the music shifts into an uneasy, angular waltz: the figure of Abberline takes center stage, portrayed by the soloist as he investigates the aftermath. The waltz is melodically off-kilter and harmonically unstable, capturing both the grotesque nature of the crime and the detective's mental burden. The scene then returns to the streets - but this time, the musical material is more intricate, fragmented, and tense. The threat has deepened, and again the silence is shattered by violence. A second, slightly altered waltz follows, further reflecting Abberline's obsessive descent into the case. In the final section, the chase begins in earnest. Themes from earlier return in quick succession, intensified and overlapping as time runs out. The ancient Dies Irae chant is woven into the texture, evoking fate and judgment. In a final, erratic surge, the euphonium and band race toward an ending that is breathless and unresolved - a reflection of history's unanswered questions and the ghost that always stayed one step ahead. £75.16Gothique Fantasy - On a theme by Boellmann (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This magnificent work was commissioned by The Illinois Brass Band for the 2024 North American Brass Band Championships. Based on Leon Boellmann's epic organ work Suite Gothique, the 3rd movement of which is entitled Priere a Notre-Dame (A Prayer for Notre Dame), it pays tribute to the nearly 700-year-old Notre-Dame de Paris after the fire which did so much damage to this iconic building. Notre-Dame stands out for its three pipe organs (one historic) and its immense church bells, which are referenced at various times in Gothique Fantasy. Two of the other movements from Boellmann's work also provide inspiration for the piece, firstly the Introduction - Choral, and the famous Toccata, snippets of which appear at various times in the piece. Gothique Fantasy opens with the Choral, a solo offstage cornet sounding the opening statement. A quintet, stood to the side of the stage, takes up the Choral, while the rest of the band enters on held muted notes, creating a sustained effect evoking the harmonies spreading across the vast cathedral. Colossal organ-like sounds announce themselves as the full band takes on the theme. A lively Animato follows. Here there are continued references to the Choral, while the famous Toccata motif starts to appear. A Misterioso section ensues, which leads into a poignant Prayer for Notre Dame featuring a euphonium duet, where the music reflects upon the devasting fire and centuries of history and artefacts that were lost. A lone euphonium the sounds, representing the remaining remnants of the cathedral. A chaotic and rhythmic Presto, based on the Toccata, then follows and tests the technique of the band from top to bottom, whilst moving through various time signatures, the pulse lacking any sense of stability. A return to the Choral theme leads into a further reflective section, this time featuring the secondary theme from the Toccata with a flugel and solo horn duet. Next the music arrives at an aleatory section (Senza Misura), which depicts the remnants of the fire, followed by the grand cathedral emerging out of the ashes. Various motifs from earlier in the piece are heard across the band. At this point, various parts enter at different times on the conductor's signal, before building towards a 6/8 Presto. Here the music gathers momentum as it leads to a Grandioso finale featuring the Choral in all its glory. However, to conclude the work, the final strains of the Toccata sound, bringing the work to a glorious conclusion as Notre-Dame rises again! Fallen Souls was the winner of Grimethorpe Colliery Band's 1st Annual Composition Competition in 2023. This depictive and impactful work explores the theme of human fallibility. The piece begins with a slow, yearnful introduction that depicts a fall from grace, represented by a horn solo that reflects the innate goodness of humanity. However, the music soon becomes more agitated and dissonant as it represents the temptations that can lead us astray. The opening reaches a climax of chaos and despair, as we are shown the devastating consequences of our choices. The following section depicts the temptations of humanity. The music is chaotic and seductive in this section, with regular time changes and rhythmic instability, representing the many temptations that surround us. The section ends with a sense of uncertainty, as we are left wondering whether we will succumb to these temptations. There is a reprise of the opening horn solo, and a return to the notion of human fallibility, but this time in extended form. Again there is a build toward chaos, and the music becomes more complex and textured, reflecting the complexity of the human journey. The work ends somewhat abruptly with a blaze, leaving the listener with a sense of both hope and uncertainty. Franz Joseph Haydn's Horn Concerto No.1 in D major was composed in 1762, when he was new to the Esterhazy court. It is a virtuosic concerto that showcases the beauty and range of the horn. The concerto was originally scored for solo horn and orchestra, and is one of Haydn's most popular works. Here it has been arranged by Duncan Wilson for tenor horn with brass band. His arrangement of the concerto is a faithful and effective adaptation of the original work. The movement opens with a lively tutti introduction, followed by the entrance of the solo horn. The horn plays a series of melodies and passages that are both lyrical and virtuosic. The band provides accompaniment and contrast, and the two interact in a lively dialogue. The movement builds to a climax and then concludes with a triumphant coda. VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close. £22.50Edward Gregson: Concertante for Piano and Brass Band
DescriptionProgramme NoteThe Concertante for Piano and Brass Band was written in 1966, when the composer was an undergraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. It received its first public concert performance in 1967 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, when the composer was the soloist with the International Band of the Salvation Army, conducted by Bernard Adams. It was one of the first major works to be written for this particular combination.The Concertante is unashamedly romantic in idiom and is in three movements: Prelude, Nocturne and Rondo. The Prelude is cast in sonata form and opens with a short cadenza-like flourish from the soloist, followed by two main ideas - the first sweepingly dramatic, the second highly lyrical. The interplay between these two themes forms the main focus of the movement, and after a return to the opening theme, an exuberant codetta brings the music to a close, albeit a quiet one. https://morthanveld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Gregson-Concertante-1st-movt-clip.mp3The tender Nocturne opens with an introduction from the band that contains precursors of the two main ideas to follow. The solo piano announces the main theme, which has a slightly 'bluesy' character with its flattened third and seventh notes of the scale, and is a love song dedicated to the composer's wife-to-be. The band enters with phrases of a chorale already hinted at in the introduction - Ray Steadman-Allen's hymn tune 'Esher' - but never quite presented in its complete state. The main theme is playful in character, with much interplay between soloist and band, whilst the middle section presents a new theme, and one that has more than a hint of the hymn tune 'Onward Christian Soldiers', in what amounts to a good humoured parody. The opening Rondo theme returns, this time leading to a powerful and dissonant climax from the band.
