This piece for brass quintet is built around the tune of the popular hymn What a Friend we have in Jesus. The euphonium starts the piece with a flourish - the preacher's call to listen. After a slow introduction of the main tune, the piece soon moves into a jazz style variation played on the cornet/trumpet. Two other tunes appear, first one to which the words 'I love him better every day' are often sung, and the second, in a more reflective mood, tells 'This is why I love my Jesus'. The original melody in its variation form returns in a swing style to finish the piece. This horn concerto by American composer Sean Brown However was commissioned by Anna Edwards and the Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island for the composer himself to perform. The composer writes: 'I made sure to write the solo horn part in a way that really challenged me but wasn't nearly impossible to play. And, since I love the sound of the orchestra so much, I made sure that this piece isn't just about the horn soloist. I intended for the horn and orchestra to take the journey together, side by side, as two old friends would. I was careful to write and arrange the orchestra so that balance between the soloist and orchestra wouldn't be a problem. There are times where the orchestra parts have more of an equal role with the soloist, a role which never should be forgotten. Important melodic lines in the orchestra should be brought out, and the soloist should be willing to play loud when the music really calls for it.' This version is for horn soloist in F and piano. Cerulean is a four-minute composition for a 10-piece brass ensemble. Commissioned by Fabian Bloch and written for The AmBRASSadors, the piece recieved its premiere on the 4th November 2017, in Switzerland. The piece is a fusion of both jazz and classical concert hall music. It uses an array of harmonies to depict the colours visible in the scenic summer skies overlooking Cardiff bay, an area where the composer spent most of his free time whilst a student. To give maximum flexibility, transposing parts are available for horn, baritone, trombone, euphonium and tuba.
