£115.60Voluntary Artillery & Rifle Corps March - Endeerby Jackson - Ray Farr
The march was written by Enderby Jackson and performed during a series of brass band events which took place at the Crystal Palace, London 1860 - 1863. Enderby Jackson was the organiser of these historically important events, and also conducted the massed band concerts. The Volunteer Force was a part-time, citizen army created in May 1859 by the British government as a result of increasing tensions between Britain and France. By 1862 more than 200,000 men had enlisted and were paid when on duty however, each member of the corps had to provide his own weapon and equipment.Some of the volunteer corps had bands which normally numbered between six and twelve players plus percussion1 and these bands became an important stimulant to the development of brass band.2 The corps were heavily subsidised by the government and considerable funding was spent on the bands3 which were often local brass bands. These bands were often provided with rehearsal rooms, instruments and uniforms,4 furthermore, the volunteer movement created and saved many brass bands.5Most of the musicians performing at the Crystal Palace Contests were affiliated to the Volunteer Force.

This was also theoriginal subject of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, from which Hermann Pallhuber derives much of his material. The work has proved an exceptionally popular test piece all over the world. In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains - an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. This brass band transcription has been made by PhillipLittlemore and explores the sonorous and warm sounds of the brass band. The Catskills is the second movement of East Coast Pictures, originally written for wind band, and was commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth WindOrchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast, an area that provides greatextremesin the geography and the people.

This brass band transcription has been made by Phillip Littlemore and provides adriving and punchy 4 minute work for brass band. 'New York' is the third movement of 'East Coast Pictures', originally written for wind band, commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from NationalWestminster Bank plc. £72.99English Dances, Set 1, Op. 27: No. 1 - Sir Malcolm Arnold - Ray Farr
English Dances, Set I, opus 27, is a light classic composition that was written for orchestra by the British composer Malcolm Arnold in 1950. The set contains four dances that continue without pause: the individual movements are indicated by the tempo markings. The work came about at the request of Bernard de Nevers, at the time the head of publisher Alfred Lengnick & Co., who asked Arnold to write a suite of dances as an English counterpart to Dvo ak's Slavonic Dances and Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances. The premiere took place in the spring of 1951, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. Following the success of the first set, DeNevers asked the composer to write a second one, which Arnold completed the next year (Op. 33). The Andantino from the first set has been skilfully arranged and orchestrated for brass band by Ray Farr.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was a British composer. His most famous work is the orchestra suite "The Planets". "Jupiter Hymn" is an excerpt from the fourth movement named "Jupiter". The clarinet-parts in the beginning of the piece may be omitted if the band not require doublings of the brass parts.
