DescriptionKopanitsa was commissioned by Gavin Pritchard, who is also the work's dedicatee and gave the first performance with the Tongwynlais Temperance Band conducted by Gareth Pritchard at the Butlins Mineworkers Championship on 20 January 2008, winning the prize for best soloist as a result. He has recorded it on the CD "Enter the Galaxies" accompanied by the Cory Band conducted by Robert Childs.Gavin had requested a virtuoso showpiece featuring as many instruments as possible. The solo part is therefore written for vibraphone (bowed and struck), 10 x tuned tom toms, 5 x suspended cymbals plus hi-hat and a xylophone. The soloist's 'choreography' therefore forms an integral part of the performance. This can be seen to great effect in Gavin's performance of the work at the 2013 Brass in Concert Championship with Tredegar Band, available on the DVD of the event from World of Brass. A 'kopanitsa' is a Bulgarian folk dance that traditionally features two slow beats and two quick beats, reflected in the central 10/8 section. The music is deliberately Balkan in character, using the characteristic modes of Greek and Bulgarian folk music, and accelerates regularly to finish at breakneck speed. The tom-tom section marked 'ad lib.' after [D] can be improvised if the soloist wishes.You can follow the score in the preview video below!

Journey of the Lone Wolf (score & parts) - Simon Dobson
Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Bla Bartk. It was commissioned by Dr. Nicholas Childs for Black Dyke Band, who gave the first performance on Sunday 26 January 2014 at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass.The composer's programme notes for each movement: 1. Capturing the Peasants' SongAfter the upheaval of moving to Budapest the young Bla Bartk meets Zoltn Kodly and the pair embark on summertime adventures throughout the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishing variety (both harmonically and rhythmically) of gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkans. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartk's beloved Hungary into chaos.2. Night MusicBartk was at times a cold man, aloof and lonely. The odd moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed here in a series of evocative solos. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartk may have heard in the USA later in his life.3. Flight and FightHaving been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America, Bartk, the anti-fascist, felt isolated and angry. In this movement we hear his longing for a simpler time of gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes. This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!

Funky Hedde - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
A good friend of mine, trombonist and professor Jesper Juul Windahl commissioned me a trombone quartet. I then wrote Four Nordic Folk Pops. The last of the four is a Norwegian tune called Havard Hedde in a funky version.Then I made a brass quintet version for Lofoten Brass Quintet for a their Australia tour. The trombonist in the quintet asked me for a brass band version to be used in an entertainment contest (SIDDIS Brass). Havard Hedde did not succeed in getting married, but I think this version wil make him dance again.Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

I Byen Samarkand - Nordstoga-Hovland - Svein H. Giske
Odd Nordstoga is an award winning Norwegian artist who has been active since the 1990's, working in the popular-/folk music genre. I have listened to a lot of Odd Nordstogas music, in particular the Heim te mor-album. When preparing for Askoy Brass Band's participation at Siddis Brass in 2008, I came across I byen Samarkand, another of Nordstogas tunes. This was from the Pilegrim album. I thought it had an exciting mix of expressions and included it in the band's repertoire for the Siddis Brass competiton.Pilegrim was initially a commision by the Bergen International Festival back in 2005, based on lyrics by author Ragnar Hovland and Odd Nordstoga's music. - Svein H. Dag Wiren (1905-1986) came to fame as a composer in 1937 with Serenade for string orchestra, Op. 11, which remains his most played work to date. His opus list is mainly instrumental music; five symphonies, five string quartets, several overtures and a lot of film and theatre music.He composed the stage music for William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, which was performed at Dramaten in Stockholm in 1944. The drama was performed again in 1961, somewhat revised by Wiren. From this production, Wiren compiled a concert suite that he called Romantic Suite, Op. 22.The fifth and final movement is Portia's Castle Orchestra, which is based on an Irish folk melody.This instrumentation for Brass Band is based on the arrangement for wind band by Jerker Johansson. The instrumentation was written for Askoy Brass Band's performance at Siddis Brass 2022.

The Promised Land (Bra) - Max Stannard
The Promised Land was written in response to a request by Jonathan Parton to create a piece for Lancaster University Brass Band which would allow the band to show off a range of soloists. The piece was recorded by County Brass a Lancaster. There are solos for Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, E flat Bass and Solo Cornet. The piece then builds to a rousing conclusion involving the full band. The melody which inspired this piece is an American folk song called, I'm Bound for the Promised Land.

Epic Journey to Torshavne is an impressive concert work, commissioned by Gouden Spiker Festival 2016. The journey begins At Sea as trombones announce first sighting of the island. A stirring theme in basses creates mystery and anticipation as the island gradually appears. A lively theme in 3/2 introduces Folk Dance & Celebration conjuring dramatic images of early settlers, followed by a calmer rendition entitled People of Torshavn. A brass chorale segues into Finale with a fast reprise and brass chords underscore the splendour of the island.
