It didn't reach world-wide success until the piece was recorded by artist Bette Midler and featured in the film, The Rose. Songwriter, Amanda McBroom recalls that she wrote the piece in just 45 minutes. The work has now been arranged as a gorgeous Euphonium solo with lower brass (flugelhorn down the band) accompaniment and is a great new addition to a soloist's repertoire. The work is not technically demanding and the lyrical tone of the piece is one that will allow players of all ages to shine with this solo. The 'Concerto for Euphonium' with Brass Band is scored in three movements: The Lure of the Red Jacket; Far Beyond the Stars; The Dragon's Den. The Lure of the Red Jacket responds musically to these ideas and attitudes; a non-relenting riff that signifies the hard slog of practice, scorings which find members of the band supporting the soloist, all the time the soloist putting together new riffs and ideas. Stylistically all this happens within a frame of minimalism and funk. Far Beyond the Stars is a simple folk-like melody that is stated by the soloist, which develops with different harmonic backdrops being introduced. The poignant words form the focus of the emotional intensity of this piece. The Dragon's Den is a fierce and fiery fusion of energy, virtuosic playing and intricate ensemble work, the finale of the Concerto for Euphonium draws upon the composers experience of big band and small group performance and writing. Flugel Horn Solo with Brass BandThe relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is a key element of the myths associated with the Trojan war.. Its exact nature has been a subject of dispute in both the classical period and modern times. In the Iliad, the two heroes have a deep and meaningful friendship. Achilles is tender towards Patroclus, while he is callous and arrogant towards others.Of Wind & Weeping (2015) is a flugel solo, with the soloist representing Greek warrior Achilles and the pain he faces following the death of Patroclus. For a brief moment, Achilles' character shifts from a strong and unbreakable warrior to an emotional and vulnerable character. The solo should be played with expression and feeling, a character who is mourning a loved one with mixed feelings of sadness, shock and vengeance.The work was written in early 2015 for flugel soloist David James and Tongwynlais Temperance Band, with whom he is a member.
