"As a bass trombonist, I spent many years of my adolescence playing in youth orchestras, engaging in musical daydreams. I would visualize myself jumping up from the back of the orchestra to unleash improvisations much to the conductor's horror. The resultant three-movement, thirteen-minute work has enjoyed a robust life with performances by notable orchestras all around the world. Happily, the concerto works well as a recital piece, with many accomplished college players having won concerto competitions performing it. Jazz elements were inescapable, and realizing my old nightmare/dream, quite a bit of the trombone solo is meant to be improvised. I made a recording of the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was included on a CD called Bach to Brubeck released on Koch International Classics. Having already become popular as a bass trombone work with orchestra accompaniment, renowned British Bass Trombonist and publisher Roger Argente suggested he release a special Brass Band arrangement of my concerto. Roger knew the piece well because years ago he played the European premiere of the concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall." - Chris Brubeck. Duration: 13.00. This three-movement suite was commissioned by the Swedish Brass Band Association as the test piece for the Championship Section of their 2008 National Contest. The first movement is inspired by the magnificent Swedish hymn 'How Great Thou Art'. Indeed the influence of that hymn can be traced in all three movements. The declamatory style of the opening gives way to other, more reflective expressions of awe and wonder. A more animated section develops before a final, triumphant statement of the 'How Great' idea returns to finish the movement. The slow second movement features another much-loved Swedish hymn. The music provides plenty of scope for expressive playing, and a feeling of intimacy should be created by the use of several short solo passages. The third movement Allegro brings a totally different, dance-like mood with frequent references to a reel from the region of Uppland. This eventually brings a return to the opening subject and a final, triumphant reference to 'How Great Thou Art'.

Sambezi is the brass band version of the last movement of Philip Sparke's Trombone Concerto. It starts in a joyful and outgoing mood with the soloist playing a carefree samba tune. A jazz-induced central tune explores the higher ranges of the trombone before the samba rhythms set up a 'contest' between the soloist and the band's trombone section. Al Sharq (pronounced al-sha-rak) was commissioned by Tredegar Town Band as part of their programme for the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.The piece is an exciting and exotic concert work for brass band, which is heavily influenced by the genres 'Third Stream' and 'Arabic'. The composition is highly rhythmical and percussion heavy, which makes use of 'Tam-tam vibrato' - a technique which was invented by the composer especially for this composition.There are plenty of opportunities for the musicians to try something different, such as the aleatoric harmonic framework at the opening of the composition, shouting, 'hi-fiving', special choreography and even playing a didgeridoo!Al Sharq is a technically demanding piece which exploits the talents of all sections of the ensemble, especially the principal solo cornet, who starts the piece with an atmospheric cadenza. This composition by Bertrand Moren presents various dreams which could have an effect on a dreamer's life. Its very high level of difficulty provides a great challenge for the conductor and musicians. You will be taken through a living Nightmare, with spine-chilling passages as dissonant chords alternate with aggressive percussion. Daydream is a patchwork of solos with all the brass band soloists playing serene and soft melodic lines with a virtuosic trombone cadenza. Finally, Visions portrays visions of insanity reflected by violent and discordant descending motifs leading to visions of joy presented in a sparkling and cheerful finale. 15:00
