Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. ABOUT THIS PIECE: Cantatio are pleased to release this arrangement of Sunset by Paul Mottram from his album Symphonic Minimalism. Originally recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, this piece is often heard on TV and radio, most recently on Ken Bruce's show on BBC Radio 2 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Paul says of this piece: "I very loosely modelled the track on some of the compositions of John Barry - a simple lyrical melodic style with an almost regal feel and beautiful orchestral sound. I was indeed imagining a sunset when I wrote it and had some sense of the piece having an ultimate warm, resigned, quiet finality about it". You can read more about the piece here. Shackleton's Cross - Howard Goodall
Shackleton s Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910 1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012.Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall s sensitive arrangement for trumpet or cornet and brass band follows the composer s alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ).

Nigel Hess' vivacious and colourful A Christmas Overture, originally commissioned as an orchestral work by John Rutter for his 2007 Christmas Festival, proved an instant success with audience and orchestra alike. Traditional carols, skillfully juxtaposed and interwoven, provide the thematic material. These include Ding Dong! Merrily On High; Il Est N Le Divin Enfant; Infant Holy, Infant Lowly; Personent Hodie; We Wish You A Merry Christmas and Angels From The Realms Of Glory, which brings the overture to a majestic close. DescriptionMonteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers for the Blessed Virgin) is a musical setting by Claudio Monteverdi of the evening vespers on Marian feasts, scored for soloists, choirs, and orchestra. It is an ambitious work in scope, style and scoring, and has a duration of around 90 minutes. Published in Venice with a dedication to Pope Paul V dated 1 September 1610 as Sanctissimae Virgini Missa senis vocibus ac Vesperae pluribus decantandae, cum nonnullis sacris concentibus, ad Sacella sive Principum Cubicula accommodata ("Mass for the Most Holy Virgin for six voices, and Vespers for several voices with some sacred songs, suitable for chapels and ducal chambers"), it is mercifully regularly shortened to Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610.Monteverdi was born and spent the first part of his working life in Cremona before moving to Mantua (where he composed the Vespers) and finally attaining one of the top jobs in Italian renaissance music as Maestro di Capella at the Basilica di San Marco in Venice. There are composers that have gone done in history by just a single composition. One of those is the Italian violinist and composer Vittorio Monti (1868-1922). Around 1904 he wrote "Czardas", which soon became a favourite among violinists inrestaurant and gipsy orchestras. Monti was also conductor of the Lamoureux Orchestra in Paris and wrote music for ballets and operettas.Csardas is originally a Hungarian folk dance with a slow part (lassu) and a fast part (friska). The virtuoso solo in this arrangement for brass band is written for euphonium and marimba.
