Concert Overture for Brass BandIn the year 1340 in the town of Ghent, a son was born to Edward III King of England and his Queen Phillipa. The boy, afterwards known as John O'Gaunt (Ghent) grew up to be a warrior and before he was 20 he was fighting in France beside his brother, the Black Prince. For many years he was occupied with the wars in France and Spain and was seldom in England. His first two marriages brought him great riches and position, but the love of his life was Catherine Swynford, who bore him four children. Whilst he was away , his Palace of Savoy was burnt to the ground by the mob during the Peasant's Revolt. Finally in 1394 he returned home and married Catherine, for whom he felt a strong affection since her first marriage in St. Clement Danes Church in the Strand, many years before. £66.72Letters from Flanders (Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
This descriptive work by Australian composer Andrew Batterham portrays the experiences of his maternal grandfather, Corporal Reginald Littlejohns, (4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion) in the First World War. Reginald left Melbourne for Europe in May 1916 then served in Flanders through to the end of the war. He returned in April 1919, having sent hundreds of letters home during his service. His honest, articulate, and highly descriptive prose served as inspiration for this piece. Each of the 5 movements portrays a different aspect of Reginald's war, with a quote from his letters included. The first movement was premiered by the Box Hill City Band, conducted by Matt van Emmerik, in Melbourne. Daniel van Bergen conducted Booroondara Brass performing most of the work in April 2019, and Box Hill premiered the complete version in November 2019 conducted by Simon Brown. Fanfare Prelude on 'Richmond' was written for the inaugural Texas Brass Fest, held at Round Top Festival Institute on 27 May 2023, for the four premier brass bands in Texas - Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio Brass Bands. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church by Charles Wesley, which is also known as 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing', the first verse of which reads: O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! For maximum effect it is suggested that cornets and trombones are staged stood around the band, although if this is not possible then traditional band formation will be acceptable. In Eternity, Danish composer and conductor Michael Bojesen sets a text by the Danish poet Ellen Heiberg as a choral fantasy piece. In this effective arrangement by Scottish composer/arranger David Robb, after a simple, pure opening melody, lilting unison lines evoke the roll of the ocean's waves and the smoothness of the stone which represents a piece of "all eternity." Following the opening hymn, layered melodies overlap and circle each other, representing the cycle of time. Each melody repeats and builds until it dies away, and the band returns to unison to end on a single note. PDF download includes score and parts. COMPOSER: Chris CobonMoments in Brass -Set 2Nos. 5 - 8'Moments in Brass ~ Set 2' follows on, chronologically, from Moments in Brass ~ Set 1 and the three programmatic pieces about steam trains. LMR600 Gordon, Tornado (LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163) and The Lady Armaghdale.In contrast, Moments in Brass are all examples of absolute music and is non-representational. The compositions develop from ideas I have found interesting and, in some cases quirky.The pieces are grouped into sets of four; which allows for shorter pieces that still have musical value. Conductors should not feel compelled to perform all four together (although they do work well in that form) the moments are not movements, but individual pieces in their own right.Musical traits: I particularly like exploring shifting tonal centres, metre and the use of appoggiaturas. Hidden in a number of the Brass Moments is the use of a rising scale, inspired by the brass in the closing sections of Respighi's Pines of Rome.

Snow Island(Thierry Deleruyelle)De Haske | 10 minutesThe composer writes:The Swiss canton of Valais is renowned for the qualify of its musicians and orchestras, such as wind bands and brass bands. It is home to a number of ensembles that regularly top the podium at Swiss and European competitions. For the general public, the Valais is above all a unique place, between the Rhone Glacier and Lake Geneva where life is good. The skiing is great in winter, particularly in Crans-Montana, which offers breathtaking 180-degree panoramic views. This tourist destination has developed since the late 19thcentury to become an internationally renowned "island of snow".The brass players of the five music associations of the villages of Crans-Montana were awarded the organisation of the 2024 cantonal festival, for which this work was commissioned. It depicts the dynamism of the resort through a lively first part based on a motif featuring a rhythm imbued with adventure and challenge. This is followed by a slower, more melodic section, a gentle, expressive theme highlighting the talent of the band's soloists. The piece ends with a short and brilliant coda.This work was commissioned by the Cantonal Associations of Valais, Bern, Jura, Geneva, Solothurn and Innerschweiz, and was chosen as the compulsory piece in the second category of the 2024 cantonal celebrations.
