This set includes two short fanfares for six-piece brass ensemble, Flourish for an Occasion and Fanfare for PL, written for 3 Trumpets in Bb and 3 Trombones (2 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombones)Flourish for an Occasion: This short fanfare, scored for three trumpets and three trombones, was written in 1981 for the wedding of Paul and Hazel Patterson. Paul was a fellow student of the composer at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1960's. The Flourish was later used in a version for brass band in a work entitled Occasion. In 2009, one year after its formation, the Swiss brass ensemble Azimuts Brass commissioned its conductor, Marc Jeanbourquin, to write them a signature tune. He composed Jazzimut, which features a festive introduction followed by a lyrical theme. After a few bars of rock rhythm, Jazzimut goes disco and finishes with a recapitulation of the introduction as a fanfare. "Leviathan" began its evolution as a workshop work inspired by the poem written by Heathcote Williams entitled; "Whale Nation". At the time of this workshop the tentet brass repertoire existed of extremely well written original or arranged works of a lighter nature but there was a shortage of works with a greater emotional depth and edge, hence Leviathan's early conception as an atmospheric and emotive work. The workshop piece explored whale sound and song and was a 25 minute work in two parts. After many years of the workshop sketches sitting dormant the new work Leviathan is a much shorter and concise work. It contains only one of the original melodic themes of the workshop work. Leviathan is driven and underpinned by melodic and rhythmic elements. It is a programmed work following the awe inspiring majestic might and beauty of whales through to a hunt scene, the chase, and the ultimate demise of earth's largest mammal. Originally commissioned by Superbrass for brass ensemble, this arrangement is by Tom Barton. Duration: 6.30. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above.

Icebreaker was originally written for Superbrass in March 2012 and recorded in it's original brass dectet and percussion form on their "Brass Taps" CD. The work begins with tumultuous fanfare, shrouded by thick chords in the lower brass. This fanfare-like material leads to a biting statement from the trombones. An 'icy' gritty section, once again played by the trombones grows in energy, punctuated by the return of the fanfares. The horns, providing a little respite, emerge in a quiet restrained line, which is coloured by the rest of the ensemble. Before fully coming to fruition, the horn line is quickly cut-short and subsumed by the sudden return of the energetic material from the other instruments, which grows to the end of the piece. Duration: 4.30. Suitable for Championship Section Bands.

When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available for band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done.
