£33.08The Piano Preludes (Brass Band) George Gershwin arr. Rob Bushnell
First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, The Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote seven, performed only six publically and was further reduced to three when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baiao and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was "a sort of blues lullaby" consists of two sections: the first a "lazy" melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called "Spanish" by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. He remembers sins no more (S.A.S.B. 460), the positive message of Easter Sunday is reflected in this bright march style.1356: Selection - I love the sweetest name (Noel Jones)This devotional selection includes three songs that feature the name of Jesus and derives its title from the following lines of those songs; 'How sweet the name of Jesus sounds' (S.A.S.B. 78), 'O, how I love the Saviour's name! The sweetest name on earth' (S.A.S.B. 94) and 'Sweetest name on mortal tongue' (S.A.S.B. 93).1357: Renewal (Harold Burgmayer)Will J. Brand penned the song Renewal (S.A.S.B. 634), with music by Bramwell Coles, for 'Day of Renewal' meetings conducted by General Albert Orsborn in October 1949. It was published in that form in The Musical Salvationist in 1951. Over time these meaningful words of consecration became wedded to an alternative tune, a lovely melody by Oscar Ahnfelt known as Trust in God (T.B. 903). This setting for band is based on a male-voice arrangement, conceived for a time of renewed consecration, sung by massed bands at the Canadian Staff Band's 50th Anniversary Festival in 2019.1358: Groove Hosanna! (Munashe Chikwezvero)This is a funk setting of three well-known melodies associated with Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Today, such celebratory processions, and indeed most large gatherings, usually feature rich forms of music-making. Music provides atmosphere and generates excitement, and it is hoped that a funk inspired arrangement of these songs will inspire listeners to 'move to the groove'. The first two songs, Children of Jerusalem (S.A.S.B. 356) and Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising (S.A.S.B. 362) encourage us to sing 'Loud hosannas to our King!'. The words of the third song, When his salvation bringing, remind us that he "smiled to hear their song".

Aspects of Adiemus is a collection from one of the world's most popular composers, Karl Jenkins. Adiemus, literally translated, means 'we will draw near' and represents a musical language which can be heard on five award winning albums from the composer.Since Adiemus has risen in popularity around the world, it has become a growing entity meaning many different things to many different people. Vocally, the spread of influence grows wider all the time, taking in Arabic and African sounds as well as "Celtic" and ecclesiastical ones. The percussion too has expanded using Indian, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Chinese and even Australian instrumentation.The evolving nature of Adiemus has meant that it has been difficult to categorise. New age, classical crossover, world music, even pop. Karl sees this as a good sign: "To me, Adiemus transcends labels. The fact that it reaches people of different backgrounds, faiths and cultures gives it a universal appeal which is special. The compositions can be spiritual, religious, meditative - it's open to 'move' people in any away they choose to experience."Ironically, the Adiemus project 'got off the ground' initially due to a television commercial for an airline. Karl Jenkins explains, "I'd been toying with a new idea, completely separate to my work in advertising, but at this time, Jenkins Ratledge were commissioned to come up with the music for an airline commercial. We presented the client with a demonstration tape of one of my completed compositions and they loved it."That composition became known as Adiemus. The music for the airline commercial was aired and immediately drew interest from the public. Karl: "It's ironic that a piece of music not originally intended for a TV commercial should end up on a TV commercial, and that this music became the springboard for the success of the Adiemus project."Expertly arranged by Peter Graham, Aspects of Adiemus features the eponymous 'Adiemus', an uplifting and instantly recognisable opener. 'Chorale - Za Ma Ba' and 'Chorale - Vocalise' are songs of sanctuary, the latter featuring a chamber group from within the band. The vibrant 'Song of the Spirit' is a cornet feature, and the finale, 'Song of the Plains' combines intense rhythmic energy with tribal harmonies. Kevin Norbury writes:This tune has always been a favourite of mine. It was first published in Holland in 1624 and then appeared in a later collection called David's Psalmen in 1685. In many hymnals it is still known by its original name, Vruechten. In the vast majority of cases, the melody is associated with the lyrics by George Ratcliffe Woodward, an ordained minister of the Church of England, who lived from 1848 to 1934.At no time in this piece do I envisage any heaviness of style. Even in slow movement, whilst predominantly homophonic, the music should flow and be transparent. The music seeks to capture the essence of joy in both the melody and words (S.A.S.B. 234).

It is regarded by many as the unofficialanthemofTynesideand is frequentlysungby supporters ofNewcastle United Football ClubandNewcastle Falconsrugby club.Blaydonis a small town inGateshead, situated about 4 miles (6.4km) fromNewcastle upon Tyne, inNorth East England. The race used to take place on the Stella Haugh 1 mile (1.6km) west of Blaydon.Stella South Power Station(demolished in 1995) was built on the site of the track in the early 1950s, after the races had stopped taking place in 1916.Water of Tyne (sometimes rendered as The Waters of Tyne) is a folk song (Roud number1364) from the north-east of England. The song is sung by a girl or woman lamenting the fact that her paramour is on the opposite bank of theRiver Tyne. Sleeve notes to Michael Hunt's recording of Tyneside songs states that "the ferry is believed to be that atHaughton Castleon theNorth Tyne". Alternatively the "rough river" in the last line may indicate a point further downstream, possiblyTynemouth.The song was collected byJohn Bellin 1810 and published two years later inRhymes of Northern Bards.The Keel Row is a traditional Tyneside folk song evoking the life and work of thekeelmenofNewcastle upon Tyne. A closely related song was first published in aScottishcollection of the 1770s, but may be considerably older, and it is unclear whether the tune is Scottish or English in origin.The opening lines of the song set it inSandgate, that part of the quayside overlooking the River Tyne to the east of the city centre where the keelmen lived and which is still overlooked by theKeelmen's Hospital.Versions of the song appear in both England and Scotland, with Scottish versions referring tothe Canongaterather than Sandgate. The earliest printing was in the 1770s inEdinburghin A Collection of Favourite Scots Tunes, edited by Charles Maclean, though the tune was also found in several late eighteenth-century English manuscript collections. As the term "keel" was used both sides of the border, it has not been determined which version was the original, althoughFrank Kidsonsurmised that like many other songs collected by Maclean it may originally have been aJacobiteair from the time of the1745 rebellion. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear.Western Girl: A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale.Just a ballad: A ballad in pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A').Play the Game: An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here.San Diego: A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.Final Dance: Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style.
