Stealing Apples - Fats Waller - Reid Gilje

"Stealing Apples" is an old swing-tune written by Fats Waller. Performances by Benny Goodman and his big band made the song very popular. In this arrangement for brass band, the mallet percussion is very essential. Mallet Percussion presents the melody from letter A and is also featured as soli-instruments from letter L to P. These parts can alternatively be played as vibraphone solo. Please be aware of the balance at letter A. Horn and Trombones must play piano but well articulated. Letter D must sound sparkling and fresh with articulated and powerful trombones and cornets (using straight-mute).Make shue that the 8th-notes are not played too dotted two bars before letter G. Almost even 8th-notes accentuated on the start of the slur is a good tip.Watch the balance at letter H. This part have to sound homogeniously. The soloistic Soprano Cornet at letter Q must be played in the style of Benny Goodan. The accompaniment must not be too powerful from letter R to S. Best of luck with the performance!

Sing Sang Sung - Gordon Goodwin - Reid Gilje

"Sing Sang Sung" is inspired by "Sing Sing Sing" from the legendary 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra. The famous "Jungle Groove" presented by drummer Gene Krupa and the opening riff from the 1938 performance is retained in this brilliant, swinging tune composed by Gordon Goodmin. The style changes from swing to "jungle groove" (with extensive use of tom-toms), is essential for both these tunes. The best sound recording of "Sing Sang Sung" is "Swingin' For the Fences" by Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band released in 2000. But, you should also listen to the original "Sing Sing Sing" from the 1938 Benny Goodman recording as well!

    Funk Engine - Ryan Howells

Funk Engine was commissioned for the Intermediate Section of the 2016 National Youth Brass Band Championships. When I was commissioned to write a piece for the championships I decided that I wanted to create something a bit different to standard brass band repertoire. I decided that the best way to do this was to go a bit out of my comfort zone and explore some styles of music that I have yet to experiment with.I have always been a great lover of Jazz, Funk and Big Band music and the sounds associated with them. In Funk Engine I have tried to capture some of these sounds, however, I am a brass-bander at heart and as such I've tried to create a fusion of styles that hopefully combines the best of brass band and jazz into one piece.

Swing the Mountain King - Edvard Grieg - Simon Kerwin

'In the Hall of the Mountain King' was composed by Grieg as part of the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. A fantasy story written in verse, Peer Gynt tells of the adventures of the eponymous boy.The sequence in which In the Hall of the Mountain King is used is when Peer sneaks into the Troll Mountain King's castle. The piece is played when Peer attempts to escape from the King. When the trolls spot Peer, they give chase and the music begins to speed up. Peer begins to run, and the music begins to get increasingly louder and faster. Finally, at the end, the King catches Peer Gynt, picks him up and hurls him out the back door of the castle. The piece abruptly finishes on this note. This inventive arrangement from the pen of Simon Kerwin gives Grieg's original masterpiece a full big band treatment!

    The Rising - Andrew Ford

To human beings, bush-fires are terrifying and often deadly events. But to the Australian bush, they bring the prospect of regeneration. After the conflagration, comes peace. It is often only a few days after the fire that the first shoots start to appear. Pale green leaves bud on charred branches. Slowly, the Bush renews itself. Over years, even decades, the native vegetation re-establishes itself, the undergrowth becomes thick once more. In effect, of course, the forest is now stockpiling fuel, and if not checked and occasionally cleared, the cycle must continue. The Bush needs fire to survive. These were the images I had in mind when I was composing The Rising. This is what gave me my structure. But, really, the piece might represent any sort of rising - revolutionary or religious, cosmic or simply musical - where a violent event brings peace and then, after a time, too much peace leads to violence. This short work begins with one big bang, then builds inexorably towards another. At the end, it feels as though the piece might begin again (and again (and again)) . . .The Rising was commissioned by the Black Dyke Band and is dedicated to them with respect and great admiration. ? Walking With Heroes - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The idea behind the title is that as humans we remember great people living and past who have touched our lives and have made a big impact on how we lead our lives; people like our loved ones, family members, friends, religious leaders and celebrities. They have either taught us, helped us to understand or lead their lives by example and, in our eyes, are heroes. We look up to these people and remember them as heroes. Their spirit and influence stays with us wherever we are. Thus, we are 'Walking with Heroes'.This piece was commissioned by Donald Hanson in memory of his father, William. It was first performed by Black Dyke Band on Saturday 18th May 2007 in Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Walking With Heroes is the title track of Paul Lovatt-Cooper's debut CD, recorded by the Black Dyke Band.
