The Great Race, for solo euphonium and band, follows Phileas Fogg on the last stage of his epic journey Around the World in Eighty Days (from the novel by Jules Verne). The moto perpetuo nature of the music gives full rein to the soloists technical virtuosity. As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloists increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.Available MultiMedia Files

Ordet "rock" er velkjent i musikken, men er ogsa en enorm stein eller del av et fjell.The title of the second movement is a play with the word "rock" is a well-known word describing a musical genre. But it is also a giant stone or a part of a mountain.3. Seascape (Allegro)I denne satsen forsoker jeg a fange ulike aspekter ved havet, samtidig som satsen samler opp musikalske ideer fra de to foregaende satsene. Denne satsen videreforer, oppsummerer og avslutter verket.The third movement is inspired by different aspects of the sea. Hellfire was written for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's programme of music at the 40th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead; a programme which told the story of the Great Fire of London 350 years ago. Hellfire depicts part of the story where the fire broke out on Pudding Lane and spread throughout London, causing havoc and leading people to flee from the city for their safety. The piece opens with night falling upon the city on the evening of September 2nd, 1666. Swirling sounds and distant rumblings are heard throughout the band as easterly winds blow strongly through the city. Suddenly a single spark is blown out of the baker's oven and ignites the great fire. The fire quickly spreads, alarm bells are raised, and panic ensues as people scream and run for their lives from the menacing fire. The strong wind carries the dancing fire across rooftops from house to house and the sound of collapsing structures thunders with the roaring flames. People look in awe and horror at the mighty fire surrounding them, whilst they stand in the ‘eye of the storm'. Gunpowder-fuelled explosions boom and the escape from the city continues. People piling their precious belongings onto boats and sailing down the River Thames to escape. A feeling of hope is cast upon London as the fire finally begins to subside, and 4 days later... darkness finally falls upon the city once more.

Commissioned by Dr. Robert Childs for Foden's Band's ‘Celebration of Youth' Brass in Concert 2017 programme, Memories of a Lost Boy takes its inspiration from J.M Barrie's fictional character - the epitome of eternal youth - Peter Pan.Peter is a free spirit who can fly and never grows up. In Hook, he flies away to Kensington Gardens, only to return and find that his parents have forgotten about him and have had another child. Peter becomes the leader of the Lost Boys, a band of boys who were lost by their parents and came to live on the mythical island of Neverland.Scottish Novelist and playwright, J.M. Barrie, created Peter's character based on his older brother, David, who died in an ice-skating accident the day before his 14th birthday. His mother and brother thought of him as forever a boy.Memories of a Lost Boy can be heard on Flowers Band's 2018 CD release: Celebrate - 50 Years of Flowers.

The Spirit Within - Ben Hollings
The Spirit Within is meant to represent the human spirit and the capabilities of human emotion, which is portrayed by the harmony in the piece. The harmonic language is the focal point that plays on the relationship between major and minor chords, including lots of extended harmony and suspensions that encompass the main melody.The piece has the ability to show off the quality sound from a brass band whilst providing a thought provoking piece for the audience to enjoy.The Spirit Within is featured on the Grimethorpe Colliery Band CD, Grimthorpe Entertain.

Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog - Ben Hollings
Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog was commissioned by Leigh Baker and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Band, for the 2014 Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.The theme of the programme was a modern take on Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition', where each piece was based upon a painting. Mussorgsky's Promenade theme can be heard as a motif throughout the piece and is interwoven with original thematic ideas. The piece was inspired by a painting entitled 'Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog', and explores the theme in a variation of styles, including a slow and tranquil opening, which builds into a fast, loud and exciting finale.

Lament was written for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's programme of music at the 40th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead.The programme, based upon the Great Fire of London, tells the story of the fire in 1666. There were between 8-10 deaths recorded as a result of the fire, however once the damage of the fire was realised, the death toll was expected to be much higher. Lament pays tribute to those that lost their lives in the fire, where the reduced brass ensemble is a reflection of the number of lives lost. The piece allows for a moment of reflection in a programme based on such terror and panic.

Novella - Ben Hollings
Novella was originally written for Eminence Brass Quartet to display the lyrical qualities of the ensemble through use of simplistic writing, whilst providing a reflective piece for the audience to enjoy.I decided to arrange Novella into a duet for Cornet and Euphonium after deciding that the lyrical writing would transfer into a duet setting effectively. The piece tells the tale of a short musical story where interweaving musical lines are showcased in the solo parts and are set against a simple, yet effective, brass band accompaniment.

First Light - Ben Hollings
First Light was written for Kirsty Abbotts and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. A slow lilting melody is presented in the cornet solo and passed between the band and the soloist to create images of the tranquil night before the piece reaches a climactic moment which is meant to represent the beams of light emerging as the sun rises. The theme is then presented in a tutti forte section before arriving at a tranquil finish.First Light is featured on the Kirsty Abbotts and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Bands CD, A Search for Peace.
